Is taking classes on Saturday a good idea?

I am getting familiar to WebSTAC these days. I noticed the lab for chem 111a, which is chem 151G to be more accurate, is available on Saturday. Since the lab takes some much time, I am going to take it on Sat so that I can leave the weekdays for other courses. Is this a good or bad idea? I mean I don't really want to miss many activities, if any, on Saturday...

Thanks in advance.

Pretty much everyone I know absolutely DESPISED getting stuck in that saturday lab.
I don’t know anyone who willingly chose that lab- they couldn’t get into any other lab.

It starts at 9am. Word of advice, as a high school student you may think a 9 am class is late compared to how early you’re up for high school, 9 am classes are miserable. And 9am labs are even worse.
In my personal opinion, take one of the week labs, and allow yourself to sleep more on the weekends.
You should have more than enough time to fit this lab into the week.

The only activity I can think of that you might have on a Saturday morning is floor brunches, if your floor/ra’s choose to do that on Saturdays… actually, no idea how floor brunches will work without center court (this is a very depressing realization…)

However, if you choose to join a club that, say, has an occasional overnight thing friday to saturday (like a membership weekend, or going away for whatever reason), it would really suck to have to blow that off because of a lab.

Thanks Johnson.
One more question: Can we take two classes that are back on back, if you know what i mean?

I think you can manage that, because classes start seven minutes after the listed time, right?

I read about it in Bear Facts…but what if the buildings are far away? lol…hehe

Johnson, there seems are two labs starting from 8:00am on T and R…i guess they are even worse than the Sat. lab?

No.

I’d suggest doing all your classes in the week. If one you need to take won’t fit, that’s an indication that you’re taking way too many classes. Pare it down for first semester; you’ll not only want to get a feel for the workload before diving into the deep end, but you definitely want time to make friends.

Of course, I’m biased…I’m really terrible at making sure I’m not overloading myself and seem to always get burnt out somewhere around november. I know what it’s like to want to take a million classes, is what I’m saying, and have learned time and time again how much unnecessary stress I put upon myself by actually doing so. I’m being extra careful to avoid that at Wash U, especially freshman year.

back-to-back classes should be fine. If the first one is a discussion-based class, odds are you won’t get out before the hour is up, but you should still make it. Usually you can talk to your professor and explain that you’ll run late, or whatever. I had two classes that were way across campus that way, and ended up just using a bicycle for that semester to get between those classes, worked out fine; left the bicycle locked up for the rest of the year though.

I had a morning chem lab last semester. 8am on tuesday or thursday is FAR better than a 9am on saturday, hands down. Seriously, unless you’re the kind of person who doesn’t want to have any fun on friday night (be it partying or just hanging out with friends), do not take a Saturday lab. You will hate it.

I purposely make sure I have back to back classes. I think next semester most days of the week I have class at 10, 11, and 12. However, this is a matter of personal preference- not a matter of whether or not you can make it to class on time. Unless you’re going from the art school to a writing class in the village, you’ll be perfectly fine.

I stack my classes because I know I’m not going to get anything done in an hour break… However, I have friends who like to spend that hour in the library. I just know it would be useless for me to even think I’d have a chance of getting anything done.

hey cedric, how did you find all the course times and such on webstac? Are you registering or just looking? Do we even need to start scheduling classes over summer? I thought we waited until orientation to do that? lol, thanks.

nooob- as an artsci student, you won’t register until orientation (unless you go to an artsci weekend). However, you can make your schedule now- by filling out the registration worksheet on webstac. (this schedule isn’t official though until you actually enroll in the classes when you register).

imo- it’s probably best to go in with some idea of what you want to take, and with a possible schedule already made (so that you know if you need a certain section to avoid class overlaps).

Another concern about timing of classes: For chemistry, lab sections are available 8am-12pm and 1pm-5pm (since I’ve already ruled out saturday classes). Do you think an earlier class or a later class is better? Might I have clubs that would schedule meetings before 5pm?

^Most likely not. The majority of clubs (and all of the ones I’m aware of times for) will either have meetings on weekends or at night). If possible, imo, the 1-5 labs are better than the 8am. You’d have to try really hard to sleep through a 1pm lab, while I know a lot of people who have missed morning labs at one point or another.

For the record, I’ve had both 1pm and 8am labs. It’s miserable having an 8am lab if you’re not a morning person.

For engineering do you register on line - I think there is a specific day that registration opens - am I correct?
