Is taking elementary math classes a problem?

Hello,

I would like to transfer to Berkeley as a Sociology major (Davis is my back-up). I've completed 15 units and have a 4.0.

Now, I'm starting on my math. I enrolled in elementary algebra, but realize that I actually am going to have to review prealgebra before going on to elementary algebra. In other words, I'll be completing three pre-college math courses before I get to my statistics course. Will this look really bad on my application? I placed in college-level English and got an A in Engl 1, I'm just really bad at math.

Also, I would like to take all of my pre-college math classes as credit/no credit so they don't have the potential to mess up my GPA. Will three C/NCs look bad on my application? Thanks much for your input!

The only effect I see these courses having on your application is timing. Since you need a UC transferable course in mathematical concepts and quantitative reasoning to transfer, this course must be completed by spring 2009 if you want to transfer in fall 2009, you might have to take summer school courses to transfer when you originally planned to.

Without knowing your plans or more of your background its difficult any other effects in regards to pre-requisite courses this might have. I’d work with your transfer center and perhaps an adviser in the department at a campus you want to transfer to and verify if taking the courses C/NC could affect your graduation.

As long as the math courses are non-transferable, it is okay to take them as CR/NC.

I can’t imagine they would look at that, especially since it’s not a transferable course. I had to take it too and I will major in sociology. I think it’s basically to make sure you will be able to do the work that is required of you once you get to the statistics course. If you are planning on taking Statistics for Behavioral Sciences, I heard they change the requirement for the prerequisite this year and there is none. Only what I heard. My friend is enrolled and hasn’t taken a placement test or any other Algebra classes. As far as I can tell, the prerequisite still stands. Very strange…I sure hated the semesters that involved Algebra. Good luck.

The GPA does not matter too much for these courses since they are not transferable, but as UCD mentioned, they are EXTREMELY strict about finishing the math requirement in time. If you need to complete a lot of intermediate math you should definitely start early.

Thanks everyone for responding! Needless to say, it’s been an upsetting week realizing that I have to go back to elementary math in order to graduate. Luckily, I will have enough semesters to do the whole Math sequence, so I am not too worried about time. Not looking forward to a and a half years of Math, though!

Thanks for all of your input!

That’s how I felt! Trust me though, you might appreciate all of it. I know I learned a lot more by taking the entire sequence through beginning algebra all the way to calculus.

Wow! Congrats to you… that’s very impressive. Glad to know I’m not the only one… I’m not planning on going all the way to Calculus, just need to get my college-level statistics course and I’m done!

question here, why is it that you can’t enroll straight to statistics and have to take three pre-college math courses? isn’t it sort of a waste of time that you’d have to go through 3 semesters worth of classes before jumping into your pre-req class, stats?

It depends on what classes you are placed in during your college matriculation test. It gauges your competency in Math and English and places you in the appropriate classes to your skill level, so you’re not too far ahead of what you know. You can also contest the placement test if you have taken a higher math class, such as in high school, and you have the documentation to prove it.

ah, so i assume that elementary algebra is starting from the bottom? and does the contesting of the placement test always work? for example if i were to do poorly on the placement test and end up in elementary algebra but have taken a class like pre-calculus or ap calculus/ap statistics in high school (just passing the class, not including passing the ap exam), could i be placed straight to a stats course to fulfill my pre-req?

That could most likely be the case. Just show the Admissions and Records office your high school transcript and they will put you in the appropriate class.

oh, just curious but what was your highest level math class in high school? did it feel at any point kind of tedious to be taking an extra three semesters of math just to get to the only class that would transfer over?

I basically did nothing in high school, and the highest math I took was geometry.

waits for everyone to finish laughing

It did seem tedious at first, and a little embarrassing to be in Beginning Algebra, but I feel that I have a stronger grasp on math now. No regrets!

It’s all about summer sessions if you place into a low math class. I started the summer after high school and have been taking a math class every semester since then. My course pattern went like this: Beginning Algebra -> Intermed. Algebra -> Trig -> Pre-Calc -> Stats -> Calc 1 -> Calc 2.

That’s alot of math! haha. Oh, and you can tell that i’m thrilled to take Linear Algebra after I transfer… NOT!
