Is taking Pre-Calculus and Algebra II at the same time feasible?

Hello CC,

I am currently taking Geometry and Algebra II online at the same time right now. I have a 101% in Geo and a 100% in Algebra II and the 1 semester is almost over, is taking pre-calculus now a good idea? I really want to get to multivariable and then linear algebra in senior year so I want to go as fast as I can if possible. Just wondering if this is possible at all.

Thanks,

Bxtays

Pre calc is a lot of Alg 2 review so you might be able to get away with it but i think it would be smarter to take pre calc over the summer at a local CC so you know you arent going to miss any content.

@kassh4 Sadly, that’s not possible. I am going to a host family within the summer so I wanted to get this class out of the way, I just was hoping to see if it’s possible. I’m really good with math, just wondering.

easy peasy if you are good in math, as it seems. There is some overlap but by the time you get to calculus you will need both sets of tools. Precal does not particularly rely on imaginary numbers or such Algebra II topics. I pretty much skipped Algebra II myself with no real loss.

I took Algebra II over the summer and was then able to take Pre-cal during the school year. But I suppose you wouldn’t be able to do that because of your schedule. I really wouldn’t encourage taking three math courses at one time but if you truly feel like you could handle it then go for it. The other thing is, Pre-cal is composed of a lot of Sin, Cos, and Tan which is something you might just be learning in Geometry, and you will need a strong foundation for that to attempt Pre-Cal. Also, have you thought about just taking Pre-cal along with multivariable at the same time next year? Anyway, I don’t know if that was any help to make your problem easier but best of luck!

Yeah, I understand that. I already self studied geometry but could not take a placement test out of it, I practically know most of geometry and I have quite a good foundation in it, sometimes the teacher doesn’t grade fairly in that class but it’s fine.

Just wondering if anyone else has any more input?

Anyone?

I disagree. In most places, two years of algebra plus a year of geometry are prerequisites for precalc.

I believe algebra 2 needs to be completed before precalc. I wouldn’t do both at the same time, since precalc draws heavily from algebra 2 concepts.

You run a huge risk of going too fast - and what for? What’s your end game? Why the hurry?
You need calculus 1+2 before you take multivariate calculus. Completing calculus 2/BC senior year already places you in an enviable situation for a college major in stem.
What year are you in highschool?
