Is it? Im a psych major with a 4.0 with 39 units, will TAP help me out alot?

I didn’t even put honors on my application even though I was on honors at cc, and I was accepted to ucla as a biochemistry major. I didn’t have a 4.0. Your only problem is you dont have enough units.

If you can keep up the 4.0 until you transfer, then you’re good to go. But still, I would say TAP is a major admissions booster for anyone who’s in the program. If you really want to guarantee your spot (yes, it’s not transfer guarantee, but almost 95% of students get in with TAP), then I’d say apply for TAP at your school.

TAP is a MUST for UCLA’s College of Letters and Science, and if you already have an impressive GPA, having TAP will only supplement your chances of getting in.

for example a 3.3 student with TAP certification has a much better shot at getting into UCLA than a 3.3 student without it

Just do it.

If UCLA is your dream school, do everything you can do to maximize your chance to get in.

from what i’ve seen on these boards, having your gpa at or above the average of those admitted to your major is good enough.

Ditto on what dhl3 said. It’s not even that hard.

TAP will only help you for college of letters and sciences, it is not good for engineering or any of the other schools.

Additionally TAP will not help you with communications majors

For Psych, TAP is great at helping you get in, but in addition to that it also helps you by allowing you to have an alternate major.

Thanks guys, UCLA is my dream school, but i havent started the TAP yet. I’m going to have to do 15 units by the end of spring to be certified, right? Psych is an impacted major…

I would do TAP. If you are a 4.0 student Honors classes should be no problem for you.

I actually like Honors Classes better than regular classes. More in depth, better students, better teachers, more engaging. Not really “harder”, if anything I find them easier.

95% is a bit exaggerated.

The rates are lower than that.

Within a few years , it will get to a point where there are so many people in the TAP program that the rates will really fall. Mainly because the slots allotted for each major will remain the same or even be reduced due to budget cuts.

I wouldn’t be surprised if more L&S majors will be added to the excluded list. Biz Econ might be one of them in the next 1-3 years.

do it - yes, most of the times i find honors classes to be easier than regular classes. surprising, huh ?

here’s the dealio:
it’s not because of TAP that TAP students get in. TAP just attracts the students that typically would have made it in either way hence the high admit rate. those that don’t make it probably don’t have what it takes to begin with, I doubt a TAP cert would change the case.

I think it really depends on your GPA. If you are borderline, do it without question. If you are well above the average, it may not be worth it especially if you haven’t even started the program. If you have to take 2 or 3 honors classes over each of the next two semesters, your GPA may suffer. Honors classes most definitely DO require more work (and quite a bit of it, in my experience).

If you are even somewhat borderline, it is a must because of the option to apply to an alternate major. For example, my friend is TAP certitifed and applied as a History major first and a Philosophy major second. She was accepted by the Philosophy department. Had she not been TAP certified, she would have been rejected.

Based on your stats above, I wouldn’t bother. I would just keep your 4.0 at whatever cost and write a kick ass essay. That’s just me though.

Thanks guys, i probably could keep the 4.0 if i just finish my pre reqs and not do TAP. The only thing that keeps me up at night is the fact that on some of the UCLA admits threads 4.0s got rejected.

kissingurami- some of my friends say the same thing lol to be honest i like the easy lifestyle of regular classes- no HW, just tests haha

KC- you may be right, i will have to take 2-3 honors classes to get TAP finished after the Spring semester, that might mess things up. I’ll keep your advice in mind thanks brah

@lakers… i can’t cite sources or anything, but it’s my belief that the people who were rejected from any major with a 4.0 had a major discrepancy with their application… like, tons of missing prereqs (or one, for super competitive majors), or insufficient units, or missing IGETC requirement… that, or they applied to uber competitive Haas or UCLA comm / bus/econ…

for psych, make sure you’ve got the basics taken care of (IGETC / Prereqs / units) and you’ll do fine.

thanks pinker, i will for sure complete the pre reqs and the igetc. After reviewing my course schedule it looks like i can fit in 3 honors classes for fall with a total of 16 units, that is if the classes i want dont fill up.
