I visited Temple yesterday, and I loved it. They have some excellent programs, a location with plentiful internships, and a huge selection of clubs. I just have a few questions for anyone who is familar with Temple or a student at TU:

1). How are the class sizes? I love Temple's academics, but the only thing that concerns me is that I might get some gigantic courses. If you want to stick to mostly small classes (under 30), is it possible? Have you found your classes to be interactive, or are they primarily lectures? And are lecture classes as bad as people say they are?

2). What are Temple's study abroad offerings like? I really, really want to study abroad, however, I don't have a lot of extra money. Are there programs that will allow you to study abroad for Temple's tuition? Are scholarships available for programs with additional costs?

3). Prior to visiting Temple, a lot of people shared horror stories about its neighborhood. When I walked on (and outside of) campus, I felt perfectly safe. For those who attend or have spent a lot of time at TU, how safe do you feel overall? Can a female walk alone at night if she stays on campus? Do you hear about a lot of campus crime?

4). Is it possible to double major or create your own major at Temple?

5). Lastly, does anyone know anything about Temple's journalism, history, English, political science or geography departments and would like to share their experiences?

Class sizes differ. This semester I had a class with 15 people, 200+, 100 and two classes with 30 people. But you always feel like you can ask questions so if that’s what you’re worried about, then don’t worry.

Temple has the study abroad information on their website. You can go to Rome, Japan, and a bunch of other places. I think you can even suggest a place where you want to go and you can do it and get credit for it. I’m not too familiar with it though since I probably won’t be doing that (unfortunately…!) I think there are scholarships but they’re probably hard to get.

I live way off campus, but when I’m on campus I feel safe. Just don’t stray too far. And as a female, I don’t think you should be out at night around there. Directly on campus, yes, but any little bit outside, no.

I think that you can double major/create your own major, not sure though.

I took some classes in the Political Science departments. I learned a lot in them. Dunno what else to say about them, haha.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

The class sizes differ. It also definitely depends on what department the class is in and how many students are required to take it. Some Gened’s and intro classes are huge, while I am getting classes with about 15 people in them. However generally if the class is large you will have a recitation with a small group of students and a TA that will really help you.
2.There are a ton of study abroad opportunities and Temple actually has a campus in both Rome and Japan so they are for Temple tuition. They also offer tons of scholarships for other programs, but some of them are not specifically temple created or affiliated.
3.The campus is safe. There are horror stories, and i would not walk around off campus alone, especially being a female. But on campus and with friends it is generally safe. They also have the owlloop which will drop you off from the tech center late at night.
4.You can double major at Temple, I am doing it :D

I am a history major currently. In the beginning it will be a lot of large lecture halls. The more advanced courses are smaller and the professors are generally much better. There are tons of course offerings and opportunities to do research.
