Is that a serious problem if english(college composition)is B?

When applying for TAG, I found that UC system seems really care about the grade of English.
So I want to know that if English got B, is it less competitive to get into UCLA or Cal?
My major is math.
One of my friends was rejected by Cal and his major was biochemistry, though he had a high GPA which was about 3.95...The only subject he got B was English (college composition) and that really scared me...

As a Transfer or High School? It all depends, having a high GPA does help a lot, but you are still competing with thousands of other applicants, and a UC only has an allotted amount of applicants they can accept, so like your friend even though he was qualified the school probably didn’t have enough room to admit him. Also depending on the major as well, you have better chances on less impacted majors. Just keep doing well in school, write a good essay, get some EC’s and possible work experience to make you a better candidate to get into UCLA or CAL.
I am applying to UCLA and CAL too as a Math major, good luck.

I’ve never heard of UC systems being super picky about English grades… I could be wrong though.

Your second example though is a little off base. There are people with 4.0’s who get rejected from Berkeley. I doubt it was just for English alone.

I think your friend was probably rejected for some other reason. You could have a 4.0 GPA, amazing EC’s and essay, etc and be rejected if you applied with 59 or less semester units. What I’m getting at is sometimes people overlook the most basic requirements and think they’re an automatic admit with their 3.9+. The 75th percentile of admitted transfer students is 4.0 so there’s no guarantee when it comes to Berkeley. And, like others have said good luck getting into some of the heavily impacted majors at Cal like Bio, engi, business.

I was admitted to Cal this past cycle and I had a 3.65 ish GPA with a B in my first English comp class. So I think its pretty safe to say that they don’t throw all the applications with a “B” in English in the reject pile.
