Is the Act with writing subsitutable for the Subject tests?

I'm looking to apply to some schools that require Subject tests and I've heard that the act with writing is a suitable replacement for the these tests. I was just wondering if anyone could clarify this for me before i register for the test in June. If i can, then it would save me money and brain cells.
Thanks in advance!

That is true for some schools, but not others. You need to look at the websites for the schools you are interested in to know for sure. The SAT with 2 (3 for Georgetown and maybe others) subject tests works everywhere, but ACT with writing does not, so if you do not do the research for every school then you should go the SAT route.

Only if the school web site says so. You have to read testing requirements for admission to your major at every school you are considering. There is no general rule. For example for non-STEM majors Yale takes ACT+W in place of SATIIs, Princeton does not and Columbia does not require them at all. Go figure.
