is the campus ugly?

im thinkin about wash
but i hear the campus is downtown
in the "ghetto"
what do yall think?

You must be thinking of a different school...

actually, i think washu is technically in clayton (or if not IN, very close to it), which is an upscale suburb of st. louis. i'm a 110 lb female and would be perfectly comfortable walking alone at night.
regarding the campus itself: with the exception of one random building made entirely of concrete (which i think they're planning to do away with anyways), the campus is absolutely, absolutely gorgeous.

plus, compared to most other big cities, there is no real "ghetto" in st. louis, MO... east st. louis is in illinois. maybe that's what you're thinking of?

you might be thinkin about the med school campus. that's more urban but even that isn't in the ghetto.

the danforth campus which is the main one is in or around clayton and the areas around it are definitely all very well off. basically everything is centered around the university there so you'll definitely feel safe. as for the campus itself, just look at the brochure, it looks exactly like that, lots of courtyards, green grass, gothic architecture, etc. it's quite beautiful.

The campus buldings are very beautiful...especially those on the South 40; however, I don't like the fact that there will be a big ass hole in ground for the next couple of years while they're busy building an underground parking lot and brand new University Centre. WashU is by no means in the ghetto @ all, its a closed campus so no roads run through it and the enviornment is very safe.

The weird thing is that before I got accepted, a junior at my school who use to live in St. Louis told me and some classmates that WUSTL was in the ghetto. I can say from my visit that Washingtion is not in a ghetto and is a very beautiful campus. It reminded me of Dartmouth's campus buildings and grounds for some reason. The surrounding park and area looked upscale to me.

I wonder where the ghetto rumor comes from?

University City (U. City) is near the campus. Delmar is the "shopping and recreation" street that students often visit. I lived in another upscale suburb of St. Louis (Frontenac) which along with Clayton and Ladue are among the poshest places to live. U. City has some beautiful areas, particularly those near Forest Park. Unfortunately, there is crime from some neighboring areas and many U. City streets are blockaded at one end to deter traffic, burglary, etc... There are reports of crime on the "other side" of Delmar (away from campus) - particularly upon females alone and break-ins to cars. However, the area is by no means a ghetto. It is safer than most places. Just be careful, particularly away from campus.

part of the reason i chose WashU was its beauty...in addition, my sister went there, just graduated, spent 4 years without even a minor hitch, safety-wise. i dunno about this ghetto thing, is SLU in a less pleasant section of town maybe?

WashU campus and the word ugly? OXYMORONS!

When I visited the campus a few months ago, the first thoughts that came into my mind was "beautiful to the point of surreal" and "did they put formaldehyde on everything? It looks so..manicured." But yea, the buildings can be described as neo-gothic, and they have a fairy-tale castle aura about them. My friend who also visited said the campus was like a bubble contained from the rest of the world. Of course, the campus does have a natural feel to it, a combination of nature and manmade architecture in synergy. waxes poetic

There's a huge upscale shopping mall near campus (if you're a student, you can get there via free shuttle ride) and something called the Loop, which is supposed to be crazy cool (haven't gone there yet, tho).

The only thing I thot was off-key about the campus was that strange anorexic bunny..I thot it was supposed to represent Brer Rabbit or something...

But yea. That's my few dimes on WashU campus.

Also, I hear they're spending a nice portion of their hefty endowment on improving and building more structures on campus...so more good news to come for incumbent undergrads?

Yep, there is always building going on. Right now, they just rebuilt Ligget Hall and are tearing down the old one and on main campus, as I stated earlier, they are building an underground garage and new University/Student Centre.

In the very near future, they will be tearing down and rebuilding Umrath House, Ruby House, Beamount House and Lee House. They will rebuild them as modern dorms and have stores on the bottom of each one (like the ones on the bottom of Lien and Gregg). This will essentially complete the South 40 Master Plan.

They are also going to be building a new structure near the athletic complex where the current parking lot is. I don't know what it will be exactly, but something is coming. Finally, they will extend the parking garages in the villiage to acomodate more people.

Campus is very pretty...we're not located downtown or anything, but we're on the border with a suburb called Clayton. The campus has lots of buildings with neo-gothic architecture, and there are lots of spread out quads with grassy, pretty areas. It's definitely not a "ghetto" campus. One reason I chose this place over Northwestern was because it has a better feel to it than Northwestern; WashU is much more self-contained, IMHO.

Hope this helps.

Having just visited Wash U, I can say that the pictures don't do the place justice.

It is a beautiful campus in every respect. It maybe doesn't have the space that ND or some Ivies have, but the campus is green (much of the year) and the buildings are what you would expect the 11th-ranked school in the nation to have.

ok, im glad its pretty. but i honestly did hear it was ugly, clearly that information was wrong.....

weird, Wash U is really pretty. The campus reminded me of Stanford a lot. If you look down from the admissions office steps you can see a beautiful lawn reminiscent of Stanford's Oval. Really gorgeous campus. Don't know what you're talking about--"ghetto"?

It didn't remind me of Stanford's campus that much at all...Stanford is in its own little microcosm, while WashU's campus is self-contained but still in a suburban area surrounded by houses, shops, etc. Needless to say both places are really pretty.

the reason i compared it to stanford was the feel of the actual campus. buildings that are cream and red, and the lawns...these reminded me of stanford

As a lifelong resident of Clayton, MO, I can safely assure you that no suburb could be less analagous to the term "ghetto", unless you consider a plethora of multi-million dollar mansions across the street from your dorm as such. The surrounding areas of WashU (Clayton and University City, primarily) boast some of the best shopping and dining districts in the entire metropolitan area. Crime doesn't occur with much prevalence in Clayton, and the "sketchier" areas of U. City are considerably far from WashU. It's pretty fantastic.

jimbob, I agree the campus reminds me of Stanford too - the colors and style of architecture. Except there aren't any palm trees.
Oh and although it's closer to the city/suburban areas unlike Stanford, that may be better since everything the city has to offer is more accessible to us..
