Is the Communication Program at CALS any good?

I without a doubt consider Cornell one of the top schools in the country but I'm not so sure about their communication major at CALS. Can anybody weigh in on the quality of the program and how it might be compared to those such the ones at Northwestern, USC, and Newhouse (Syracuse).

It's extremely good, but completely different than the three other school you mention.

Note the difference between Communication and Communications. The former is theory, the later is the practice thereof.

Here's a list of the types of topics that a Communication major would address:

About the Department: Cornell University, Department of Communication: Ithaca New York

A lot of Cornellians go on to become "communicators" in the broadcast, print, and Internet media. A degree in Communication is not required.

communication major needs to be well rounded in order to look good...

i can tell you that a communication major with an emphasis on IT (information technology) will get you a great job and a great salary ^_^

i was told by a technical writing instructor at my CC that your education/major is not as important as your skills in writing/communicating b/c you can always be trained how to do something, but you can never be taught how to write well (at least not on the job)

The communications major is not as highly regarded at Cornell as programs you mentioned... However - it is good and has great job placement. I know one student who had to choose between Newhouse and Cornell and felt he was too young to decide that Comm was absolutely what he wanted to do with life and decided to go to the better overall university. He has since graduated and is doing very well and is incredibly pleased with his decision for a variety of reasons - including all of the choices at Cornell.

Cornell's department of communication is actually pretty good and a lot of its students get great jobs. The faculty is also great and the course work is interesting. There are opportunities outside of school too, for instance the debate team and other competitions.
