Is the honors program worth it?

I got into the honors program at a college I’m probably going to attend. Im not really sure I want to do it though. I’m pretty lazy and hate work so I’m worried it’ll just be a bunch of extra work and hard classes with, from what I’ve read online, little benefit. Thoughts???

There are big differences in honors programs. Some give early registration which is a nice benefit at some schools. Without the school name it is hard to comment.

You’ll get better advice posting in your specific school’s sub forum. As noted above, honors programs vary greatly school to school.

Its for Ohio State university

I’d tell my kid to accept the offer for honors, learn more about it when you are attending and if you decide later you don’t want to pursue an honors diploma then don’t.

At Ohio State the honors requirements vary a lot by college (Business, Engineering, something else?). Generally, the benefits are honors dorms and priority scheduling.

I know with my son he started in honors, took a nice English Honors class, got priority registration his first year and then quit doing the program. For him there was very little benefit and his adviser suggested he not do it. This was a special case where grades were everything for him due to a special program he was in. Generally I think honors is a good idea but not in every case. I agree with starting it your first year and if you con’t like/need it you don’t have to continue!

I agree, benefits vary by program and it’s worth starting first year and see its worth. My sophomore son is at OSU, arts & science. The only pro he says is the priority scheduling (1 month before everyone else). There is 1 honors class he’s required to take per his major and only 1 professor teaches it. The reviews are horrible enough to affect the grades he’s trying to get into highly selective law schools. He says it’s not worth the risk, and will probably drop honors when he has to because of this.
