I am applying to Lehigh ED. I am not one of the strongest applicants, but I am into Math and Engineering. I don't know if I should apply to the IDEAS program or just apply to the Engineering School. Can I apply to IDEAS program, get rejected from the IDEAS program, and still get into Lehigh? Or I should just apply to the school of Engineering.

Just remember that IDEAS is not an accredited ABET engineering program. You need an extra year to complete the professionally accredited engineering degree.

So you need to decide what, exactly, what you want to do. IDEAS is an honors program, but you need to apply to the program that gets you where you want to be.

The program is admitting the same number of student each year, and applications to IDEAS keeps going up. So to answer your question, yes, IDEAS is becoming harder and harder to get into. IDEAS is an actual degree, so your diploma doesn’t say “[blank] engineering”, it actually says “IDEAS”. Most employers don’t know what this degree really means, which might hurt you in the long run.

You can apply to IDEAS, be rejected, and still go to Lehigh. Honestly, I would recommend just majoring in an engineering field. IDEAS just isn’t that well-known yet.

Just to clarify, If I were to apply to IDEAS and get rejected in what program might I still be accepted? And, is it harder to be accepted to Lehigh University if I were to apply to IDEAS opposed to applying as a Civil Engineer?

CivilEngineering,

You can be rejected from IDEAS but still accepted as a CivE at Lehigh. Overall though, I’d say both programs are equally elite and hard to get in to. It’s hard to place which one is easier to get in to. Best,

You can also transfer into IDEAS after you get accepted. There is a 3.25 GPA requirement to stay in IDEAS.

IDEAS is harder to get into and it is NOT an honors program if you look at the course catalog while IBE is.

Im in IDEAS and my advisor says ( from graudates and employers) it is actually an advantage to be in IDEAS because it js such an unique program.
You can get the engineering major if you do a fifth year but most people who are in IDEAS dont bother since they are not going to become engineers anyways. For example, im prelaw and mech eng and im going to law school for IP law…

I would apply to just engineering and then transfer after you talk to the advisor and some IDEAS people and get to know the program. Def recommend transfering into the program within the first maybe second semesters.
