Is the interview pool itself selected randomly?

I know that we hear that interviews are assigned randomly, but that doesn’t mean that the group that gets interviews is selected randomly. I have a hard time believing that any school does random interviews with people who have stats that are way out of its likely range. Esp when they also say they do not have enough to go around. I believe this will one day be uncovered like the " applying early does not improve your chances " lie. (That may be true at some schools but I think it is pretty clear now that that is not true at most.) Thoughts?

Well, some colleges begin to generate and distribute the contact information to the local alumni boards before any reader has screened the file. In those cases, the distribution can be assumed to be random.
