I truly love the cheap tuition(relatively cheap..) and the kinesiology program at UConn
But everyone says that there is nothing there!
I'm not that of out going person but i would like to live with at least some kind of civilization
:(
Is there really nothing besides campus in Storrs?
Is there any movie theater or place like Walmart?(I love grocery shopping!! >_>)
And really, is partying only thing that happens in the campus???
If there is walmart near campus, and Breakdancing club in UConn, i'm going there for sure!!!!

walmart is a 15 minutes away in wilamantic. theres a CVS <1 mile from campus and store 24 (24 hr convenience store) is practically on campus. but yeah, theres not a whole lot else in the immediate area...bring a car if you can

Current Students: What do you do for fun on weekends? Where are the parties if the frats are on school property? Do people go into Hartford? Do people just go home? Are there many out of state students? I got a good financial package t attend, but I am OOS and worried about the social life or lack thereof?

I have a daughter who transferred into UCONN as a sophomore from University of South Carolina. She spent this past fall there as a NSE student. Quite frankly, I thought she was nuts. USC was absolutely gorgeous with fabulous weather and beautiful campus and a great college town. All I can tell you is that she loves loves loves UCONN. I said what in the world is there in Storrs? She said there is always something going on! She does have a car there, Manchester is about a 15 to 20 minute car ride, where there is a good mall, movies, and pretty much everything she wants when she wants it. Boston is an hour bus (or train - I don’t remember) ride from campus, she is ALWAYS busy! There are many parties if you like that (she does), they have a great library if you need to study (she does), and the student population really does have a mix for everyone. She said she had a bit of “culture shock” at USC (she is a northeaster gal), where they still fly the confederate flag, and she is really happy. She is planning on Dental school, so her classes are challenging (but she knew that they would be), and UCONN is a well regarded school. This is a school where you have to be able to be independent - you will not be “coddled”. You will have to know when you can party, and when you have to say no, I have to hit the books. It is expensive for out of state (about 36k) - that is tough - if you have the opportunity to go as a freshman you have a better chance of aid or scholarship - as a transfer from out of state, basically, forget any form of aid. I hope I have helped in some way. Any questions feel free to PM me.

Thanks cece, that was helpful. Is your daughter OOS?

It takes 3-4 hours by bus to get to Boston, depending on the departure time.

You sure about that notakid? When I visited Uconn from my house in Eastern Mass it only took me a little over 2 hours to get there, and I’m about 20 miles outside of Boston, so I’m guessing it would take half of what you say it does
