<p>I think they are usually not optional.</p>
<p>To determine what is required, it is best to check with the particular colleges and not rely on secondary sources which can often be incorrect. The colleges do provide on their sites whether a mid year report is needed.</p>
<p>Also, your counselor’s position is a little too extreme. Besides colleges that require mid-year reports, there are some that recommend but do not require them or give you the option to send them. USC is one of those and thus if grades are good it is advised that you send reports to those colleges.</p>
