i want to do pre med, and i think ill get in the ucf/usf joint program. but disregarding that, and just looking at the major, is it worth it to do something that strenuous to go to med school when you can major in anything as long as you get the pre med pre reqs. would it be better to major in psych or something, get a better gpa + less labs and stuff? any other comments are welcome. thanks.

I don’t know much about this topic, but I think that the Molecular/Microbiology major would look better for med school then psychology. Also, if you were to do psych it would be difficult to get in the requirements for both med school and your psych major. Also, I think that you would be more prepared for med school with the molecular/micro major.
But that is just how I look at it, I am sure Molecular/Microbiology majors will be able to help you out.

I’m currently an M&M Major, and our advisor told us that you can major in whatever you would like as long as you meet the requirements for med school (which you can find in the site below). With that said, you’ll have an advantage if you choose the M&M major b/c you’re completing more than the required pre-reqs. However, if you go with the psych major, as long as you complete the required pre-med courses and then some, I’m sure that you’ll be fine, as most medical schools only look at what courses you have completed and not your major. Here’s what the M&M department says about this topic:

“ANY degree-granting program may be selected as a major; however, the science majors generally lend themselves most adequately to pre-health professions preparation as their curricula includes many courses required for admission to most professional schools.
Additionally, prudent use of elective hours in the curricula will permit other appropriate pre-health professions courses to be obtained.”

“Traditional majors for pre-health professionals are characterized by degree requirements which overlap most professional school admission requirements such as Chemistry, Biology, Molecular Biology and Microbiology (one major).”

“If a student elects a non-traditional pathway and does not complete more than the minimum science requirements, she or he will be expected to have accomplished an outstanding performance record in the science classes taken.”

“The curriculum for the first two years is very similar for all pre-health professions students. Professional schools are less concerned with what undergraduate major one chooses than how well he or she performed and his or her choice of enrichment electives.”

so i will probably major in m&m, and will be in the honors college next year. i will work hard, but will i be stressed to death all the time? i just dont want to feel like its too hard, in terms of my gpa will suffer. how has m&m been for you so far?

My sis is a MM major at uf and got accepted to usf med school. initially i wanted to major in MM too, but she convinced to major in biology since ill could still finish all the pre reqs for med school during my freshman and sophomore year. If you choose MM, beware that med schools look at both your overall GPA and Science GPA. MM requires you to take some pretty hard courses that you will probably take your jr and sr year. My sis had a 4.0 science gpa during her first 2 years and after taking immunology (i dont think this course is required anymore at uf) and physiology it dropped to 3.6. If you can get into the ucf/usf medical program, take MM since it is required. It is really competitive though (only 10-20 students are selected).

i’m thinking of majoring in psychology, that way i could be in something interesting and still get a good gpa/ do the pre reqs for med. and i already could be ap’d out of intro psych since i got a 5 on the ap psych exam.

med schools prefer that you take the pre reqs in college. i got a 4 in bio and 5 in chem but am still going to retake them. just the pre reqs though, you dont have to retake psych.

Assuming that my application for the UCF/USF program was accepted, then do you think it’d be worth it do MM? The intensity of the coursework you explained makes me think my gpa would definitely suffer. I mean, the standards of the program are very stringent and i kinda think i’d be better off majoring in something i’m interested in, where I could get a better gpa probably, and not have to limit myself to that major. What’s your opinion?

the ucf/usf program seems like a great opportunity if you are willing to put in the additional effort. i personally would just major in something i like. just make sure you can back up your gpa with a high mcat score though.
