I've been checking out both the musical theatre major page and the acting one, and I've noticed that the musical theatre page is always buzzing. Do more people generally auditon for musical theatre versus acting?

I think it depends. Lots of people (like me) hang out on both- they are very intertwined. My D auditioned (and was accepted for) both MT and Acting programs, but there are some people who are all one or the other. I agree with you that there often seems to be more “activity” on the other forum- maybe it comes from adding in Dance ;))

I think you’re right that there are a lot more people in the MT forum, and possibly MT is more competitive than acting (though acting is plenty competitive). MT people also have a more involved process and it starts earlier – they have a LOT more presceens, for instance, and more schools give early decisions. So things start happening sooner over there for sure.

My S auditioned for all acting no MT, but I found that school-specific forums over there extremely useful. You should check them out if you haven’t yet.

And also, sure, post in both forums. Lots of people do.

I wished we had those school specific forums on the Theater forum

Don’t know if MT is more competitive, but the audition process can be more complex because of the song/dance portion. I keep a foot in both worlds because son was accepted to both BFA MT and Acting and chose Acting though he auditioned for MT for all but one school. Both forums taught me all I know, and after surviving the last year, I feel like I know a lot :)

I just think more kids are into MT, given that most schools and local theatre programs mainly do musicals. Even at my D’s magnet PA HS, which did more straight plays than musicals, most all the kids were MT kids, and most went on to MT BFA programs, but not all. It’s a stereotype, but MT folks also tend to be very talkative and excited!

I don’t know if I’d say MT is more competitive. In general, if a school has both MT and Acting (BFA), they take more MTs than Acting students. My daughter is a BFA Acting major. There are 24 total in her class. Only around 10 of them are Acting students. I think it just depends on where you are auditioning.
