Is the National Merit Scholarship transferrable?

Can you still receive scholarship money if you switch schools? And if you switch to a school that offers more for national merit, will they give you more?

I feel like I remember reading somewhere that the scholarship doesn't transfer, and if you switch schools you get nothing. If that's true I wonder why.

Thanks!

I think it depends on the exact source of your particular scholarship. If you got either a $2000 one-time scholarship directly from National Merit Scholarship Corporation, or a NM scholarship from one of the corporations that sponsor these (usually for employee’s children with qualifying credentials and PSATs), these should be transferrable with timely notitfication to NMSC (well before checks are mailed to colleges in September or January–see the NMSC web site for details, or call them). If you accepted a multi-year NM scholarship sponsored by a particular college, then you would lose it upon transferring elsewhere. My impression is that these are awarded to entering freshman only. But check with the transfer college to see whether they would do; maybe they have some other merit money set aside for transfers?

Thank you, i think i’ll try that.
