The title says it all, I was wondering if the optional question in the writing supplement section for Uchicago is really optional and wouldn't hurt one's application.

Any thoughts?

Hey guys!

The title says it all, I was wondering if the optional question in the writing supplement section for Uchicago is really optional and wouldn't hurt one's application.

Any thoughts?

What optional question are you referring to? I don’t see any on the supplement that are optional…

EDIT: Ah okay, I see it now. Like kennedyiceit said below me, if you have any time at all to answer the question, there would definitely be no harm in answering it. It’s not too tough of a question.

i mean…it’s not that hard of a question to answer, it’s just asking you for your favorite things! i answered it, and it didn’t take that much time!

@math referring to the favorite things essay most likely, as for whether it will hurt not to do it, i don’t know but i’d do it if you are really committed to the school. i did it, got deferred

I’d recommend doing the essay–it can’t hurt, it just gives admissions more information about you. I did a (somewhat cheeky) list and was accepted.

The thing is i’m not quite sure how to address it. I mean, am I supposed to give a detailed and critical feedback of a book, movie, poem… or should I just give a list with a why short answer for each book/movie/poem… ?

Address it however you feel most comfortable: essay, list, critical evaluation or not–mine was really just “movie: __________” with some amusing categories thrown in, e.g. favorite drain cleaner. My take on essays are that they should reveal something unique about yourself, even if it’s just your writing style. You really can’t muck it up, unless you say something outrageously offensive.

Alright, thank you all !
