My son took the SAT in May and did well on the essay portion. He is taking the ACT this Saturday and I am wondering if he should take the supplemental writing or not. Any opinions on this? If he doesn't take it couldn't he just submit (if he does well enough) his ACT score and colleges would have his SAT essay score? Is combining like this alright or will they like to see the ACT essay along with his ACT score?

I am pretty sure his essay on the ACT will go with the ACT only because the writing portion of the ACT is a combination of the english portion and the essay. I believe that he has to take the ACT with writing as the SAT I writing isn't a separate test. If he signed up for it, then I think he has to take it or he will have a writing subscore of whatever he got in English + a 0 on his essay.

Thanks, vupreuss06. The only reason he is even in a position of deciding this so late given the test is tomorow is because he is going standby. On the registration packet he can check off ACT Assessment or ACT plus Writing. That's when I started thinking maybe he didn't need to do the test with the writing.

You can avoid taking the ACT writing which is a separately contained section of the test but it is better to take the writing section of the ACT unless you know the only schools you are applying to do not require it. Those that require a writing section are generally requiring either the ACT or SAT and they will not mix the two to meet that requirement, i.e., if you intend to rely on the ACT at all it must have its writing section completed even if you also submit the new SAT.
