i was just accepted to GW (yay!), and started looking up student opinions on the school to get a better idea of what it's like at GW. the most common complaint i've encountered is that many MANY kids at the school are "snobby". now, i expect a lot of wealthy kids. that's a given at any school with a tuition as high as GW's. so i guess my question for any current student is this:

is the atmosphere of wealth at GW in any way suffocating/uncomfortable, and is the school really as snobby and socioeconomically discriminating (if you can call it that) as they say? will you be left out if you're hanging on to the lower rungs of the socioec. ladder?

(so i guess that's a couple questions. woops! :p)

I wouldn’t look too much into the reviews online like studentreviews.com, b/c almost all schools there get a lot of negatives and if you are going to take time to review a school you almost certainly are going to have an extreme view about the school. I think the number is like 49% for students who apply for aid so there is going to be a lot of middle class kids at Gw as well

snobbery is not bad at all, but it’s obvious that some of the students don’t understand the value of money/hard-work. however, that’s common at any private schools, more in some than others;
anyway, it really depends on what you want to major in, if you like big cities, large universities…etc, so choose wisely :P

I wrote in a previous thread that I spent a weekend at GW with a friend from HS. Everyone I met was really nice and I hadn’t even been accepted yet! By the end of the weekend I knew that if I didn’t get accepted I was going to be really disappointed bc the people I had met were great! Give it a chance…

GW gives alot in financial aid. You will have wealthy, people who are drawn to dc, people who are drawn to politics and internships. It is very diverse… And wonderful. Yo u have to find people with similiar interests. Any private school has some rich, snobby kids

One of the reasons GW was my first choice was because of the students I met last fall when I visited. Very open, friendly, and went out of the way to help when I had questions.
BTW these were perfect strangers. I couldn’t disagree with this statement more.

Have to be honest, I’m kind of sick of hearing about the rich, snobby kids at GW. There are snobby kids at many, many private schools. Furthermore, rich is relative and does not go hand in hand with snobby. Once you’re out of high school, you have the ability to surround yourself with friends who are like yourself. Thus, if you’re more interested in impressing others then you will attract the same kind of kids. Do not let those reviews sway you, just check this board and you will see that it’s a generalization and most students are really nice.

This is something that worries me about GW. I am average, middle class I guess, and I’m only considering GW because of the huge fin aid package I got. I’m worried that I won’t fit in because I don’t have a lot of money. I don’t want to be excluded because I can’t be going out a lot and spending money. But I feel like if someone like me can afford to go there, there will be other people like us!

My daughter has been at GW for almost two years, thanks to a generous merit award, and she initially worried about the same thing. But really, it has turned out to be a total non-issue. That’s not to say there aren’t snobby kids there; I’m sure there are. But there are plenty of ALL types of kids and my daughter (a typical broke college kid) has been able to find some really good, like-minded friends who are as eager as she is to take advantage of all the great free stuff there is to do in the wonderful city.

I mean, it’s just like the kids at Georgetown…the ones that I have met…wow, they rep that Georgetown brand to the fullest…I don’t understand why, especially when you talk to someone who goes to a school that is more or less at “your level”…I went to UVA, where snoberry is also rampant.
