Is the University Scholars Program selective/very beneficial?

I was wondering if anybody who goes to school can tell me more about what these programs actually entail. For example, my letter said I was accepted to both the Honors college and the Scholar’s program. So I’m interested if someone could tell me more about each. Like what benefits does the scholar program give you above the honors program, what benefits does the honors college give you?

Also I know that more than 75 students will probably be accepted to the Scholars program because of yield, so actually on campus are there about 75 students in this program only? That seems so small :slight_smile:

Also does anybody have any more information about the weekend thingy. Also is everybody’s parents eligible to stay in the hotel?

I’m just a little confused by all this terminology.

Hey I am currently a freshman University Scholar at NU. First off congratulations! Only the top 1~2% of the application pool is considered for the Scholarship so it seems like you put yourself out there during HS. To answer you question of how many scholars there are, I believe for there are about 120 scholars in my group, and yes this is an absurdly small number. Now to benefits, first off you basically pay ZERO tuition which is awesome, there are a number of seminars and activities that are only open to Scholars. These are especially useful because they are pretty much a free pass to success if you take advantage of them. During the summer of your freshman year you get the chance to go on a Dialogue overseas FOR FREE. These are special Scholars Study Abroad kind off programs that everyone else has to pay for, even honors kids. Also you have access to the best faculty in the school, you are basically the jewel of NU and you are really treated as such. You have preferential treatment when it comes to research and opportunities both on and off campus and you can pretty much tailor your own experience once you are here. The University Scholars are also sort of an elite group within an elite group(honors), and it is perhaps the most competitive Scholarship that is offered by a university for undergraduate studies in America. Speaking of research, as a Scholar you can embark on a SIRF to any country and your research costs will be covered by the university! Including housing. Finally, all scholars are sorted into packs, and these packs are responsible for organizing some amazing outings such as Ski trips, concerts and so on…oh and did I mention that they are all totally free for Scholars? I advice you to come, because not only will you have the entirety of the University’s resources at your disposal, you will also meet some of the most amazing kids. I have friends who turned down schools like Columbia, MIT and Stanford to be a Scholar at Northeastern. I rejected some heavy weights to become an NU Scholar, and in as much as I have wondered what could have been, I must say that I have never once regretted my decision to join the NU Scholar family.

I hope this helps in some way. =)
Ps. I do believe that everybody’s parent’s are eligible to stay in the hotel.

Pardon me if there are some typos in there :blush:

Hey! Another admit here.

What do you mean by ‘eligible’ to stay in the hotel? From what I’ve read, we will be able to sleep at NU for the weekend, and parents will not be covered (eg have to stay in a third-party hotel, but are welcome at the event).

@julianstanley‌ umm that’s why I asked, I wasn’t sure. When I tried to register in the northeastern portal it said something along the lines of we’ll arrange to have your patents stay in a back bay hotel? You’d agree that seems like your family isn’t paying/arranging anything?

Haha congrats too on admissions!

@Immanuel‌ thank you, I have some more questions too, but I’m too tired right now, but I’ll post more!

The link is broken after I registered so we’ll see

@dancelance‌

Thankyou! Congratulations to you as well - can’t wait to meet everyone in March.

I’d agree that the message seems pretty misleading, but I think parents have to pay for the hotel - maybe it is just reserved at a lower rate through Cleveland Circle Travel/Northeastern?

This is coming mainly from the fact that the link below says that only student’s flight/accommodations are paid for, and that there are prices listed under the two hotel options:

Sounds like an email to NEU may be worthwhile - Jonna Iacono is super helpful and responsive, so she’ll probably have a definitive answer

@julianstanley. Well I’m not sure what your situation is, but often if you can’t pay (your parent’s costs) if you contact people like Jonna you can ask and if Northeastern can foot the bill. I’m not sure where Northeastern is since money wise it’s need aware, and not blind (but this is the first year that they meet full need!), but if the schools have money often they can pay for people who don’t have the money to fly-in, or in some cases ask (you may need proof of income).

It’s not a problem for me since I can drive in within 30 minutes lol.

For example, I did some things called fly-ins which paid for me to visit a school. Some schools will also pay for you to visit but these schools are the Ivys and top LACs who are rolling in dough.

Also I don’t want to be nosy, but is Northeastern near the top of your list? Haha I found it so funny that you’ve (thankfully willingly, and honorably to defend me) jumped into my whole college dramatics on the other forums.

@Immanuel‌ thanks again. This seems so great. While I was bemoaning my other college situations, I kind of overlooked what a gift from God that I have been given. To think that 50,000 apply, and maybe lets say 300-400ish maybe 500 get this chance (many will not join the crew of course) is amazing. And its a great thing to dwell on. I’ll be there in March.

@dancelance

Ahh I see - I’m planning to go without my parents, so it’s no problem for me.

And nosy is okay, I’m from Louisiana and nosy is kinda our thing here in the south.

Yes! Northeastern is very close to the top of my list. I really like Harvard (which is why I peeked by that forum, their molecular biology is killer) and MiT, but Northeastern will have a solid shot even if I make it into those places, since my family makes enough money to not get much financial aid but not enough money to easily pay a small fortune for college. Plus, I’ve been told that International Village, the freshman honor’s dorm, has a cafeteria on the first floor with sushi. SUSHI.

Anyways, looking forward to meeting you. My real name is the same name as my username. If you join the NU admit facebook group you can find me there
