Based on my own experiences with SF and Berkeley I remember having about a 50/50 ratio of gloomy-weather visits to sunny-weather visits, but I have no idea how accurate this is of the weather patterns. I'd really like to hear what the typical bay area weather is like from someone who is a native to the region. Hopefully you can demystify some stereotypes about this issue.

Is it always really cloudy from morning until noon? Cloudy in general?
How much does it rain during fall, winter, spring?
Average temperature during fall, winter, spring?
How many days of sunshine?
Anything else you'd like to add?

I know I can look up hard data for these questions, but I'd rather take your personal thoughts and estimates about them.

Well like right now, its pretty nice in the East Bay. It really depends, weather has been funny this year(like it rained on Sunday out of nowhere), but other than that, overall excellent weather around Berkeley and even SF.

Experience: Lived in Bay Area for the past 16 years

The weather is excellent. Even cold days are nice because the air is crisp! When you get used to the east bay’s air quality and EBMUD water, you may find yourself easily trading an LA warm day for a Bay cool day! but compared to the rest of the country the bay area has really, really good weather!

I personally love their weather, but it isn’t for everyone. It’s my ideal weather, aside from the semi-frequent rain. If you like consistently warm weather, you might be a little disappointed.

It’s really bipolar, right now the weather is usually at a really perfect temperature, but all of a sudden random rains come and it’s gloomy as hell. I like it though, it’s great not having to wear sunscreen everyday.

Um, you should still wear sunscreen everyday…anti-aging, you know. ;)

The weather is a bit nicer in Berkeley than SF, but both lie in the fog line. Winters are generally cooler than summers, but generally more sunny and less windy, too. I’d say the temps range from lows in the mid-40s to highs in the mid-70s at any time of year with at least one to three weeks in the fall and spring when high temps can reach 90. Berkeley might get some frost in the winter since it is higher up on the hill, and yes, it can and does snow (a trace) in the hills above campus.

Temps SF vs. Berkeley: Berkeley is average 5 degrees warmer and colder than SF. Warmer in the day and colder at night.

Rainy season is normally November to March, but unless it is an El Ni

Oh, and I wanted to say that it is rare that the fog is actually close to the ground, like the kind where you can’t see five feet in front of you, unless you live on one of the hills.

The “fall” is often the warmest time of the year - no fog adneven a few “shorts” days. What I loved is that you can basically wear the same clothes year round, with just a little layering. Now that I live in Indiana, I really miss the weather.

Berkeley has MUCH better weather than San Francisco. The peninsula blocks all the low fog and leaves most of the East Bay beautiful, especially in the spring, summer, and even the fall.

The East Bay is pretty warm. We’ve had good rainfall this year, but for the most part, I would describe the weather now as Mediterranean weather.

I grew up in socal, and honestly, I get super excited EVERY time it rains or is stormy, no matter how long it lasts. gloomy weather actually ups my spirits.

Then again, I’m a photographer, so I also see no sharp shadows, diffused soft lighting, and more interesting sky backgrounds
