Is their Anti-Middleeast sentiments in US colleges?

I'm just wondering whether their is discrimination against Middle-easterners in colleges. By the way I'm from Egypt.

Also, are there any top universities know for having such sentiments toward people from the middle-east.

I'm a sociable person. So, in college, I don't want to be one of those student who join clubs for Arabs and stuff. . . I want to attend a college where students mix and don't have the tendency to stick to their own cultural or ethnic group.

Help would be appreciated :-).

i’m sure it varies from college to college, but here at NYU there’s a lot of international students, and I’ve noticed a lot of Arabs/Asians. I don’t think anyone here would discriminate against you. Sure there are racists at every college, but most college students are young and open-minded, especially here in NY where it’s very diverse. I would hope people at top universities are smart and generally open-minded (not that people in regular colleges aren’t as well).

And joining arab clubs doesn’t mean you can’t be social…it just may give you an opportunity to meet other arabs and eat good mideastern food together :stuck_out_tongue: i’ve noticed a lot of internationals tend to clump together in little packs, but that doesn’t have to be you.

The answer is an almost unequivocal no. Maybe at huge, crappy, state schools, but people at top universities will probably be attracted to you because you’re from Egypt (cf. [Black friend finder](http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/e01cba7600/black-friend-finder) and [having gay friends](http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.com/2008/03/14/88-having-gay-friends/)).

This is especially funny:

Ya, I don’t want to be part of that clump. . . I might as well stay home. lol. Do you know how it is in schools like JHU, Northwestern, and Duke.

bump10char

NU has a campus in Qatar, so I hope its not too common :P

Not at all common. Feelings about Israel/ Palestine might be a little hot though.

I can’t say that I’ve noticed discrimination against Middle Easterns at college. If you stick with colleges in diverse communities, you should be fine.

^ Conservative colleges will kill anyone

I know there’s always a big debate on the middle east.
things can get pretty fired up

I stay away from it because arguments never lead anywehre

Haikumaru, what define a “conservative college” as?

Schools like Vandy, Wake, and the like?

^ conservative… well, political views and known for their student body and faculty to be right wing.

Some religious schools too…

I don’t really care a school’s “socio-political” stand point but I do want to go somewhere where I can be myself and not be nagged for it.

there are only like 5 conservative colleges in the US

Care to share soccerguy? Because that person said that Wake and Vandy was conservative…but I think they are more moderate than anything. Plus, I am pretty sure that the professors in those “conservative” schools are more likely moderate to left-leaning, considering the nature of academia.

Egypt is fine. Gaza & Syria not so much >_>

yeah, you always see the “stop the genocide in darfur” groups but never “stop the genocide in palestine” groups. :(

@rsxwheee: I also assumed that Egypt would be considered the more left-winged country in the middle-east, considering its ties with the US. But the thing is. . . if their is this so-called discrimination, I can’t really say no, I’m not Arab, I’m Egyptian, lol. Do you get what I mean?

Is Duke considered a “conservative” school?

You ARE Arab if you’re Egyptian. Egypt was once named the United Arab Republic…

That’s because there is no genocide in Palestine.

Well now I’m confused. I thought “Arab” would be classified more as a race and “Egyptian” a nationality. So isn’t it possible to be Egyptian and not Arab?

I think I’ve confused myself further now.

An entire people are are being wiped out.

African is a race, and Zimbabwe is a nationality, if your from Zimbabwe your most likely African.
