Is there a deadline to declare CS as major?

I was admitted by Berkeley L&S department this fall , and this is my first semester in Berkeley, my question is when is the deadline to declare a major, the major I want to declare is CS, someone told me I must declare my major before the end of my first semester, is it true?? pls!!!!

don’t worry, you have until junior year to declare… (i think)

but if I did not finish the lower division requirement of cs major before junior year, can I still declare cs major?

are you a transfer? o.o

yes, so this semester is my junior year

anyone???

^ If you are a junior transfer, I think you have to declare soon. You should talk to Barbara about this issue.

In your first two semesters here

the deadlines for transfers are intended to be sure that you graduate in four semesters here - thus the important point will be whether it is possible to complete the degree requirements in four regular semesters (remember you can take some classes in the summer between but it doesn’t count as a semester).

In many ways it depends on whether their are long chains of classes because of pre-reqs. If you need to take class A that is necessary to take B, then B is necessary to take C, plus you need a class Y that is a pre-req which has its own prior req of X, you would have to show that you could complete those with a reasonable scheduled of 15-17 units, plus all the other electives, upper division units and so forth you would need.

Generally transfer admissions are into a specific major where the admissions system checked that you could finish in four semesters. If you want to declare something different, it will depend on the details of what is remaining to take.

the required pre-reqs to declare are:
CS 61A
CS 61B
CS 61C
Math 1A and Math 1B
Math 54
CS 70
EECS 42

The statement about deadlines for transfers is "Transfer students are required to complete their technical prerequisites and declare the major at the end of their first or second semester at UC Berkeley " thus they recognize that transfers will generally have to take some of these at Cal.

You need to take 7-10 courses after the pre-reqs, plus some extras to hit the 36 UD units for the L&S degree, so really 10-13 courses or 3 per semester. Assuming all other L&S requirements like breadths are covered by your prior coursework, this is achieveable.

To declare, when you are taking the last pre-reqs (don’t wait until you finish them), "Submit a CS Major petition to 377 Soda Hall during the semester that all technical prerequisites are being completed. "
