I'm hearing both terms, but I don't know the difference between them, if there is one.

Also, does anyone know if American University has an undergraduate program for IR degrees?

American has an International Studies B.A.
[BA in International Studies | American University](http://www.american.edu/sis/degrees/BA-INST.cfm)

I think the name of the degree depends on the school, but most are similar.

Oh, I saw that at first and I thought it was pretty similar to an IR major when I first looked at it, but dismissed it as not being IR because it wasn’t the exact name I was looking for, so I guess there are several names for the major.

I always thought International Relations/International Affairs were about politics and government and the communication between countries and that International Studies was more about languages, cultures, and customs.

^^^
I have been researching grad schools in IR and that is sometimes the case but all three of the names seem to be basically interchangeable. It’s like the schools pick them out of a hat or something.

International relations and international affairs are both the same ( usually), just different terms.

Both are the same.

they’re actually NOT the same. it gets confusing though because some schools call their programs different things. usually international relations refers politics, government, and economy. international affairs refers to specific area and language studies.

In terms of the US Congress, the old joke is that the Senate thinks it is more dignified than the House of Representatives. Hence, there is a Senate Foreign Relations Committee, but a House Foreign Affairs Committee.

AU has SIS, the well regarded School of International Service. I believe the degree awarded is a BA degree in International Studies, but it is the same coursework as an IR degree and prospective employers, especially in Washington are familiar with the degree and the school.

To TexasRanger

International Affairs, Relations, Studies are ALL used! you have to look @ the individual college and review their curriculum. Don’t asume a “blanket” difference or similarity.
