My son is working on some EA apps. today that require a Personal Statement. These are for his bigger, safety in-state schools. Does the Personal Statement (500 word) read more as a resume but in Essay form? We need some serious guidance! Any sites to see well written Personal Statements?!

Like the Common App personal statement? Because that’s just basically a personal essay

Yeah, unfortunately these applications are for James Madison and UNC Chapel Hill which both do not use the common app. UNC has some nice prompts to choose from for some of their essays, but JMU requires a Personal Statement. So what’s the difference? If there is one.

I meant, what is the difference btw. a Personal Statement and a Personal Essay? Not the difference btw. UNC and JMU.

A personal statement is just that–a statement. Not much creativity, but a chance to tell them about yourself. An essay has a specific prompt, and is usually more creative. The typical advise is to pick a specific moment that doesn’t appear to have much significance, but to write about it in a way that tells something about you
