Is there a "first cut" i.e.: out of the 30K apps do they skim a certain # right off the top bc of

Since this thread is on Brown thread, as a commercial, if you don’t have time to read the link @iwannabe_Brown shared on #76, here is what matters to us

“And then there are facts that will affect your future. Consider that within 10 years of graduation, 80% of Brown students have furthered their education through graduate school or professional study. Our 85% admission rate to medical school and 89% admission rate to law school are both far above the national average.”

Choose what fits you instead of school name if you do have choices. Hopefully this year’s yield will be far above 50%. (that will only hurt next year’s admission rate)

@TheOldTimer which means that 1/10 people with those fantastic GPA/MCAT stays don’t get into a single medical school. I really don’t see why you think these processes are so fundamentally different. Those “countless” people not getting in anywhere you see posting here are a mix of a biased sampling and trolling.

I was actually referring to medical school admissions when I said you don’t need to educate me as I have both gone through the process as an applicant and on the ad com.

@iwannabe_Brown : I respect your opinions very much. The reason I think there is a fundamental difference between GPA/MCAT and GPA/SAT is that only a small number of medical school applicants achieve high GPA/MCAT. For example, only 3285 out 44802 applicants to medical schools achieve MCAT scores of 517 and above.

A look at Princeton’s 12,435 4.0 GPA, and 13,850 1,400 or higher SAT applicants data, I can see the value of high GPA/SAT has been greatly diluted (total applicants 26,053). However, a high weighted GPA (~4.5 and above)/SAT is much more valuable (rare). Other than stats, imho ECs and other aspects are very similar for college and medical school applications. I would have to consult you later regarding medical school application. My child was busy shadowing a group of doctors/volunteering at two hospitals during winter break.

Apologies, but how does all this med school stuff relate to OP’s original question? And UG acceptance is based on different expectations, in full, than med school. Just to try to compare gpa and scores is insufficient. Including some important aspects of ECs.

My apologies. Off topic. I do have a question related to OP’s question – is applying for financial aid being factored in at the first cut? If not, at what stage of the application process is financial situation of applicants being factored in? Are financial aid applicants being winnowed out by a quota since there is limited amount of money to be distributed?

@TheOldTimer Brown is need-blind. So it’s not being factored in, ever (for domestic students. International student need is taken into account).

At this point, the conversation is going around in speculative circles, and in several different tangents. So closing thread.
