I was under the impression that the Common Application could be any length, so I thought my 792 word essay was fine. But on my Tufts application, it says that my common application essay must be under 500 words.

Is anyone 100% positive they know what the length should be? If so thanks, because I don't want schools to think I'm purposely writing an essay that is over their length.

There is no universal word limit for the Common App essay. Unless an individual school states or implies a word limit somehow, you will not be penalized for your word count.

my commonapp essay ended up being like 1100 words....but i honestly couldnt cut it down. it would have lost a significant amount of meaning.
plus i wasnt being redundant or anything. so i think that it will only take like an extra minute or so to read my essay compared to a 800 word essay.
