hi i visited BU over break and i noticed that basically everyone there is white…i’m not white and so i was wondering if people there might kind of stick their noses up at someone who isn’t blonde and blue-eyed

Boston University is a pretty diverse community. Of those reporting, student population is about 46% white, 16% International, 10% Asian, 5% hispanic and 3% African American. Obviously, everyone is not white. I hope some students will jump in here to answer your specific question, I just wanted to point out that your perception from your visit is not in line with the reported numbers.

You shouldn’t notice racial issues at BU. Or in Boston.

yeah, even though it isn’t as diverse as some schools might be in terms of black white, it’s very diverse otherwise and extremely liberal. Most people at BU are very open minded and excited to get to know people from backgrounds other than their own.

There are a lot of asian and brown (south asian) kids. People are generally nice, and I haven’t noticed anything racial at all anywhere in Boston. BU is liberal enough to allow for political movements (as student groups on campus) that might be seen as controversial elsewhere.

No, there’s no racism. I’m surprised that that’s what you saw while on tour because BU is super diverse!

I too am pretty surprised that you left feeling like it was very white. BU is very racially diverse, including lots of International students.

Maybe I just come from an even whiter area being from the Pacific Northwest, but BU has seemed very diverse to me.

Ahhhh thank you guys so much! this really gave me a huge load of reassurance–means a lot this was really helpful

BU is racially diverse, but there are very, very few black students. Also, whoever said that there aren’t noticeable racial issues in Boston doesn’t know the city very well.

There is a lot of racism at BU. I attended college there and was subjected to racial and ethnic slurs, I was shunned, I had a Spanish professor who tried to fail me. I was also bullied and sexually harassed. I want to prevent these things from happening to anyone else. My advice is if you are a black, you should strongly consider your other options before you decide to attend this hateful school. I wish I had.

As a white guy, I don’t think so. I’ve never encountered someone who felt that BU had a lot of racism, and I’ve never heard of anyone until now calling it a hateful school. It’s actually an incredibly diverse school, in terms of there being a lot of different races, as well as a ton international students, from all different areas, not just China and Europe.

This is all as a white guy, so I guess I don’t have first hand experience, but as a current student, I can’t imagine anyone being subjected to racism regularly, especially without someone else defending them, given BU’s largely liberal population.

From the perspective of this white Jewish guy I don’t believe there is a high degree of racism at BU. While I have no doubt there are individuals affiliated with BU that hold racist and other bigoted views I can confidently say they are few and far between and don’t represent the attitudes of the BU student body at large. By looking at the demographics at BU and the types of students the university attracts its clear there are not a large number of black or African American students attending BU. I’ve found the campus to be fairly tolerant and accepting of everyone of different backgrounds. Sure we do have issues with student groups like Students for Justice in Palestine and other groups with questionable views and agendas but they do not represent the mainstream views here.

I’m not saying the experiences others have had are not true they just don’t match mine and my perception of the student body. There are plenty of legitimate critiques about BU but I have to give this one up to them, acceptance of others is well respected here.

For anyone interested some feel racism has picked up following the crime around campus:

[Black Students Describe Slurs, Suspicion Following Robberies | BU Today | Boston University](http://www.bu.edu/today/2012/black-students-describe-slurs-suspicion-following-robberies/)

Only 3% of BU’s 18,000 undergraduates is African-American but I suspect that has more to do with cost of attendance and BU’s relatively limited financial aid than anything else. Not that racial bias doesn’t exist at BU, but “racist” is the last word that would come into my head in describing any of the many BU students and alums I’ve known.

I think you will find racism everywhere - in my opinion, there are jerks everywhere. You are not the jerk whisperer. One person is racist? Move on. Talk to someone else. I think you need to look at the vast majority of responses here, compared to one variant opinion above, and make your own decision. That said, if you are really concerned, another resource you could use is to call the [The Howard Thurman Center for Common Ground | Boston University](Howard Thurman Center for Common Ground) which is the center focused on ethnic diversity at BU. I know that this center has a great reputation on campus, and the Dean of Students (who happens to be a popular, passionate, black intellectually challenging man who lights a fire under students) is quite involved with spreading the mission of diversity.

There are racist people at Boston University! The recent events there are proof of this. When I was a student there, I was called unimaginable names by people and I was complete ostracized. When I went to the Chapel to seek peace and refuge, i was subjected to even worse racism from the people there. My four years there were horrible. I would not recommend BU to anyone.

The postings from BU students are troubling but there is racism everywhere. There will always be looks and snide remarks, I wish there wasn’t but it comes from the fear of the unknown. If BU is your best choice then go, running will not accomplish anything. BTW many have come before you and have persevered. You can do it also. GL

Since ugotthat’s one and only post is to slam BU, he may be a ■■■■■ with an ax to grind against BU. @ugotthat, if you are not a ■■■■■ could you post more specifics about your experiences there and the recent events that you reference?

There are racist people at every college! I have never encountered racism at BU though. BU is a large school, and it’s silly to categorize all the students as racist when they make up only a small portion. The same can be said for society-do you hate all people because a few are racist?

That being said, if that story is true, I’m sorry that happened to you. No one should have to experience that.
