A friend’s son got into a very competitive UC as a Religious Studies major but he had a significantly lower GPA than the average for the university. Everyone speculates that it was because it was not a very popular major. I’m wondering if there is any such major at SDSU or LMU that would give a better chance of acceptance if my son’s gpa is a little below the average.
Not sure if this helps but it shows number of applications, admits and enrollees by major at SDSU.

Religious studies is usually found in the College of Letters and Sciences at the UC’s which does not admit by major. GPA is only 1 Factor out of 13 areas of review criteria for the UC’s so major alone would not be the reason for an acceptance.
SDSU admits by major, so major selection can make a difference however if the major is not something a student would like to pursue but a means of getting into a University, it can back fire if a students wants to switch into a more competitive major later.
