Is there a negative correlation w/ listening to music while studying & how well u do?

Hey guys,

Just a thought. I was listening to music and found it hard to concentrate (I was doing AP Chem homework/studying). I got my first B the next day on a test. I definately think it was b/c of the music. Does music negatively affect your studying habits / memory?

Music actually helps me focus. I feel as if it gets into my head that instead of thinking about random things while trying to read, I just listen to music and read or do work.

I’m pretty sure it varies from person to person though.

I do all my homework with music on in the background, except for when I’m reading.
Personally I can’t retain any info I read if I’m listening to music. But if it’s busy work or writing an essay or math homework, I need the music or else I get really bored.

Certain music can help you focus, as naturaldisaster said. Some people like classical music while they do hw? haha it’s all up to you

I feel like it depends on the music and the type of study. I wouldn’t try to read a textbook while listening to System of a Down, of course, but I might be quicker at completing a study guide with some Duran Duran in my phones. I guess you should try and see what works best for you personally.

Music helps, but on two conditions:

 1. It has to be music I like, but not music I love, lest I become distracted and start headbanging and singing along. Instrumental (any genre) works best for me, usually.
 2. Busywork and essay writing’s fine with music, but I can’t read and listen to music at the same time for some reason.

And semi-related, background noise helps immensely (e.g. a room full of people talking or the TV with something mediocre on).

omg end of the world

^ shut up lol

Music definitely helps me concentrate. ^ You shut up :)

Studying while listening to music definitely hurts your concentration/retention compared to studying without any distraction. But there are a lot of people who can’t bear studying without it. So my opinion is that studying at 80% of your optimum is better than not studying.

But it’s worth getting used to studying without music. You won’t find many supreme court justices reading with music blasting into their ears.

Studying/Reading = no music.
Doing math problems/science questions = music.

Adding to my first post - It’s easier to concentrate on content when you’re listening to music you like that’s repetitive and kind of simplistic. It won’t distract you because it’s pretty much the same thing all the way through. Some of my favorites for studying purposes are Nirvana and Placebo. Dance music helps me get assignments done because I like working when I can work and jam at the same time. Thus, the Duran Duran I mentioned earlier. Michael Jackson is also really good for that. I don’t listen to any rap when I study because it has the same effect as someone speaking to me while I’m trying to concentrate on something else. Somehow singing negates that effect.

Stanford researchers say instrumentals only.

Nujabes is perfect for homework.
Listen to “Aruarian dance”

Yesterday I had a math problem due that I’d literally been trying to figure out for six days. Two minutes into Kashmir, it all made sense.

I’m not trying to imply that Led Zeppelin is amazing but I mean come on, look at the facts here.

I think that with specific information you must know, like the AP histories, music just distracts you.

But practicing or doing math problems in which you don’t have to memorize every problem (but merely the formula) music isn’t bad.

Omg, I listen to music whenever I do homework in my room, and I can say that it severely affects my studying (negatively). I cannot pay attention while rocking out to Emery, Atreyu, Afi, etc.
I can’t make myself stop, either.

definitely depends on the person, the type of music, and the type of work. i can’t listen to anything when i’m reading for english, but i do math, science and french hw with the tv on and i generally listen to music when doing history readings, often something (relatively) contemporary but not too distracting, like pink floyd or ravi shankar.
