I got a 31 on my ACT and I am pretty satisfied. I don't want to go to some Ivy League School or highly competitive one. Is there a point to retaking the ACT? Would it really even make a difference?

What schools are you considering?

Benedictine University, IIT, Lewis, USF, Bradley…
basic schools in Illinois that can give just as good of an education.

Well, IIT isn’t really basic, but I would go into a 3+2 program with benedictine.

To gain admission into any of these schools, you definitely do not have to retake a 31. However, if I were you I would retake it anyway, just to perhaps gain a little more scholarship money or in case you decide that you want to apply to a few more competitive schools later on. Good luck.

Yeah, for scholarship reasons and for peace of mind, take it again.

However, don’t take it again if you think that you need to improve significantly in other areas (GPA, ECs, etc…)

I am ranked in the top 3% of my class and have a GPA around 3.8 . I’ve been president of two clubs and in most of the honor societies offered at my school. I also have 6 AP classes this year, I think more than almost anyone at my school. So I guess I should retake it?

Yeah, definitely. I’d even study a bit, too. I mean, a 31 is nice and all, but it is pretty low for the competitive schools. You may also want to try the SAT, since it really is secretly favored more by colleges.

THANKS Egbert Souse! I think I’ll probably retake the ACT and also I’m thinking of taking the SAT too. What books do you all suggest? I’m thinking the Reat ACT book…

Real ACT and Princeton Review are the ones that I’ve always heard are the best.

Get the two PR books: 1296 real questions and Cracking the ACT (2009!).

And maybe, if you are going to be really hardcore about your next ACT, try a Barron’s book. They are harder than the real deal and can make the real test look like a joke.

Stay away from Kaplan, unless you had a disproportionately low math score.

Well, here is the breakdown of what I got on my two ACT’s (31 on both):
E: 31
M: 36
R: 25
S: 31
Comp: 31

E: 32
M: 35
R: 28
S: 29
Comp: 31

10/12 on both essays
I’m all good with Math, seeing as I want to major in math/engineering.
Any more book suggestions based on this.

dude ur scores are extremely similar to mine! haha…if ur considering engineering definitely try u of i…its engineering program is the best! and why not try competitve schools? i’d apply for the heck of it and then look at all the financial stuff…best of luck!

Hey, thanks smarty99. I’ll try other schools, but I found a good program with IIT that I am considering.

Does anyone have book suggestions that are almost guarenteed to get me a score boost from what I already have if I work through the whole thing thoroughly?
