Maybe it's obvious, but I haven't found out what the schedule is for the June Summer Orientation sessions. I'm trying to figure out when we can go, flights, where to stay, etc. Dd and I are hoping to get there the day before and stay part of the day after to look around a little more. Probably no students still there and no classes going, right?

It’s my impression Tulane treats Summer Orientation as optional. That may have something to do with distance … most students coming from a considerable distance away. My D didn’t attend, nor did any of her friends. She signed up for classes online and communicated with her Advisor by email. YMMV.

You are right NewHope. I would say it falls in the “recommended but not required” category. It can help smooth the transition for some students, make parents feel more at ease, and it is a great opportunity to meet a potential roommate. For that last, of course there are online options as well, but meeting someone in person is always best if possible.

I emailed them today to ask if it was optional since I couldn’t find anything on the website…until after I had emailed them…this is the response I received…

No, the summer orientations are not mandatory. All students attend the fall welcome week which is the most important orientation. Students who do not attend summer orientations will be sent instructions through email on how to register for classes during the summer.

Certainly don’t disagree with the above. We were glad, however, that we did the June orientation. It made move-in more relaxed and manageable since we didn’t need to attend those sessions that were repeats. My D found her roommate online (and it has worked out well) so we didn’t need the June session for that personally, but we did talk to a number of students who met people during June orientations they decided to room with.

Can’t go wrong either way. Definitely nothing to obsess over.

What does the summer orientation cost? We are somewhere between the deposit and getting all the email stuff working, so we can’t get into any info about orientation yet.

I don’t think there was a charge for it, unless the parent chooses to stay in a dorm room too (not!). We didn’t attend Destination Tulane so felt that this would give S a good opportunity to see inside the dorms before he chose and to lessen the bustle of move-in. Personally, my son will probably need some hand-holding through the course registration process (by his advisor - not me!) and we have found with other S that until you understand how the whole online registration thing works - it’s pretty confusing. Anyway, I want to spend some time down there! Anyone else going to the 6/2 session and wants to hit the town sans kids?

I had thought there wasn’t a charge, but then the first screen says something about a charge if you cancel, so that made me think there was a fee for it.

I’m on way overload with the webpages/paperwork/steps of this whole process! I’m terrified of missing something important that will cause a big mess for dd :).
