I’m already a full semester into college and I don’t have any friends. I’ve tried joining clubs and talking to people but it’s all unreliable. It seems everyone is already locked into their own groups and is more focused on home life instead of college. There doesn’t seem to be a real culture or community on campus like there is in high school. Am I the only one who’s experiencing this?
It’s normal at community colleges, everyone’s got their own life like you said. It’s better if you are at a residential campus since everyone lives there. Do you live at home or in an apartment? Is there a 4-year university nearby?
What you CAN do is try to join a club that “does something” concrete, like Habitat for Humanity or the newspaper, or see if you can take some classes from the Honors Program because the students would form little groups and you could join one (just ask). Or join a group that organizes stuff on campus (uses of the campus venues, film program…)
But you can make your experience more residential by considering community college your full-time job, arrive by 9 am and only leave at night, and fill all the time with activities where you meet people and “do something”.
It depends. There are some that are more residential, and I find that those are in more desirable areas. For example, Santa Monica College or City College of Santa Barbara.
