Is there a spot on the common app to put extracurricular awards?

I see a spot for academic awards, but no spot for extracurricular awards.

Also, would being recognized by the board of education for extracurricular achievements count as an academic award? Since it was administered by the school?

My additional information section is already covering something to do with my academic transcript, so I fear putting them there would be too long and the AO’s won’t read it.

We had a similar situation. This was 2 years ago. Our idea was we will put down what we thought was important and let the adcom decide if it was relevant. So yes we put it down under the academic awards, unless there is a better section BTW - your application gets read no matter what or where you put things on it. I would rather have to much then to little. They will weed out the fluff.

Okay, so even though it was an extracurricular award, you put it under academic awards? @Knowsstuff

From the board of education… Sounds academic to me… You can also consult with your counselor on this.

Oops, sorry, I should have clarified.

Yes, that one for sure would be academic. I meant like for an award like getting a grant to teach? Science fair? Things of that nature.

Yes, I’ll consult my GC. Thanks. @Knowsstuff

I would think so also. It has to go somewhere. Getting a grant is amazing. Science fair… Still academic to me. Unless your counselor says otherwise…

Again the person reading the application has seen it all. Let them decide what is academic or not.

Not many kids can solve world peace but have things of your nature… Except the grant… That’s really great.

Any type of award can go under “Honors/Academic Awards”. Do not worry about the specifics, an award is an award. It does not matter whether it is academic or extracurricular.

Just make sure to correctly describe the award in the description area
