is there a way to get a SINGLE?

if you're gonna be a sophomore? or is that completely impossible?

also, how come there are freshman living in wada & towle when it's designed for upper div and transfer students??

I think singles are saved primarily for students who are disabled / with special circumstances.

Towle is meant for sophomores but is open to frosh.
I email housing about getting a single. Here is the story:

The chances of getting a single room are very low. There are less
than 100 single spaces on campus, and they are reserved primarily for
those with medical needs, and 3rd and 4th year students.

Cal Housing

You could apply to be an RA-- I'm pretty sure they get singles.

Ive always wondered: just how much of a discount do RA's get on housing?

I believe that it's all free, the housing and the meal plan that is.

RA's get free room and board.

are you serious? there are 1st and 2nd year ppl living in wada?

In Towles, not Wada. RA applications were due a long time ago.

one of my friends just started at s.f. state and i stayed in her dorm this weekend. then i went to cal and visited wada today (just from the outside) and it looks alot nicer than s.f. state.

is this assumption true for wada in general? i mean, is it nicer inside than the normal freshman dorms? (i'm looking to transfer to cal this fall, just fyi and am curious about on- vs. off-campus choices)

One of the nice things about Wada is that the building is only a couple of years old so it isn't as run down as, say, unit 3. It also consists of apartments instead of regular dorm rooms, so each apartment has two bedroom + a common area with a kitchen. It is also cheaper than the regular dorms, but it does not come with a meal plan and they give you an off-campus financial aid package.

Since everyone was talking about how great Wada is, I was a little surprised when I got here. Cheap furniture, cement walls, and stall showers with no bathtub. It's not that big of a deal, but it's not what I was expecting.

Personally, I'm going to move into an apartment next year. But, if you want the dorm experience with a little more privacy, I would recommend Wada. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

also, more privacy means less social in many instances. the mini suites are less social than the highrises, though ultimately it comes down to whose living there.

and for wada, i think it'll be gross if they had bathtubs (would you really take a bath.. really?). stall showers are perfect.

also, stern has been handing out singles very easily. a friend of mine applied very late (past the deadline) and still a single.

I guess my point was that even though it's described as apartment style, it doesn't really feel like an apartment--more like an oversized dorm with a common area attached.

What do you have to do to become a RA? Also, are you paid for doing it?

I know that the RA applications are done, but how hard is it to become an RA?

I wouldn't become an RA just to get a single. Those who aren't very into it have told me that the costs outweigh the benefits. If it's something you enjoy doing I'm sure it wouldn't be as big of a deal. But if you're not very into it it can seem like a lot of work.

(I'm not an RA myself-- this is just what I've been told)

cement walls in wada? in the rooms too? if so, i guess no tacking up pics or any other crap, huh?? :)

and wouldn't that give it kind of an industrial look? it seemed pretty industrial from the outside, at least when i visited it.

Yeah, I guess you could call it an industrial look. We do have a board next to our beds where we can tack stuff up if we wanted to.

I'm assuming that many of the dorms do have non-cement walls, as they do ask that you not put tacks in the wall. You can get a board to put pics and such on, though.

well, i'm only really considering wada because that's what they put transfer students in, right?

(i'm a transfer... er, hopefully will be, once i found out later this spring).

so it really doesn't matter to me what the other dorms have. i kind of like the industrial/warehouse kind of look, though. like those weird, warehouse-style apartments that i've been to in parts of oakland.
