Is there a way to get my two calculus courses dropped?

I took an alternative calculus course that my counselor said was fine if I planned to transfer to UCSD. The problem is I called UCSD and they said my counselor is wrong and that the courses I took don't count for calculus transfer credit. In these two courses I had C's.

Is there anyway I can drop these math courses because I was misled by my counselor? Not only that, but if I can get these courses dropped in time, my GPA will increase to a 3.04 which is what I need for admission. Any suggestions or comments on what I can do will be great... My GPA as of now is 2.94, but if these 2 calculus courses (3 units each, 6 units total) are dropped from my transcript, my GPA will be above 3, satisfying my tag agreement.

I am a biochemist major though, will I need two calculus courses anyways as a prerequisite though, or will my tag still be qualified?

Remember my argument will be that my counselor has given me incorrect information which has wasted my time registering/paying/attending/studying for courses that I did not need.In turn it has hurt my GPA when their was no need to even take the course and has left me in a bad situation for my admissions to another school.

and to be honest my counselor has not just done this on one occasion, because I remember her saying that I could take a course for fun and no one would see it as part of my GPA if it was not part of my major. I then took astronomy for fun, thinking I could goof around in it and I noticed that astronomy did take affect into my GPA. With all this faulty information I have been receiving it really has affected how I handled my grades or how I chose my classes.

My counselor has led me to bad choices from day 1, although not all the blame can be put on her, many of the things she has told me to do has made me lag with my transfer goals. Till i found sites like these and started to research did I learn much more than to go from my counselor.

You shouldn’t have interpreted what they said so literally-- it’s not all the counselors fault.
You clearly have to take calc

A. Take more classes (get good grades)
B. See if there is some way you can do an independent study of calc for credit

If your GPA is the bare minimum, what are the chances you are going to get in? (I’d think low, but I know little about the UC system)

Pass/No Pass (formerly Credit/No-Credit) Request Form
This form is to be used for any class in which you prefer not to receive a letter grade (A, B, C, D, F). It is generally used for classes outside of your major or classes that will not transfer to a 4-year university. However, students are advised to check with their counselor before submitting this request.

If the grade you would have received in the class is A, B, or C, you will receive the grading symbol of “CR”. The units for the class will count towards your unit total but will not affect your grade point average.

If the grade you would have received in the class is D or F, you will receive the grading symbol of “NC”. The units for the class will not count toward your unit total and will not affect your grade point average.

Please read this request carefully and provide all requested information. Submit the request to the Office of Registrations & Records by the deadline date posted in the Schedule of Classes or on the college website.

I just found this on my college website…so I guess I can submit this request and hope it gets passed ASAP and fix my applications. If I can get two of the three courses as pass/no-pass they will count as part of my units, but not my GPA hence increasing it.

“Submit the request to the Office of Registrations & Records by the deadline date posted in the Schedule of Classes or on the college website.”

If you’ve already received a grade for the class then the deadline has definitely passed. There is no way you’re removing those C’s from your transcript.

I do not think you can remove those 2 Cs from your record because no matter what you have taken them… And I am 99.99% sure that the deadline for applying to pass/no pass has been passed.

I guess I’ll be the ***. Take it as you want, but it’s meant to be constructive criticism.

You seem to be blaming your problems on your conselor and not taking any responsibility for your actions. You took the two classes because you thought they would transfer. Great. Does your poor performance in the classes have anything to do with the counselor’s recommendation? Hypothetically speaking, if the classes DID transfer your GPA would still be what it is now.

And your class for fun? You should know all courses that are taken for credit show up on your transcript. However, just because you took it for fun entitled you to fool around. Once again that is your responsibility and not your counselor’s.

If you also knew your counselor was wrong on other occasions, why didn’t you double/triple check before you took the courses?

It just seems like a lot of blaming and not taking any responsibility. Your post should read: “Yeah. I ****ed up. It was my fault.” Rather, you’re blaming someone else for your problems. Just thought you should know because that’s not going to “fly” at UCSD and it’s definitely not going to work in life.

lol thats why I never go the the counselors.

Just read assist.org if you are confused on what you need to take.

There is no way to get those two classes dropped just because the counselor mislead you.

Irregardless if the reason why you took it, once you complete a course and receive a grade in it, it becomes part of your permanent academic record and must be reported to any college, university or employer that you apply to in the future. Academic Renewal is not an option since you received passing grades for the courses. The idea that you could retroactively change your grading option for the class long after the class has been completed and a grade recorded is ridiculous.

Your comment about taking an Astronomy course so you could “goof around” in it is particularly revealing. I majored in Astronomy as an undergraduate in college and can tell you an Astronomy major has to take as much Math and Physics as a Physics major and has to take Astronomy classes that use even more advanced Math and Physics than the upper division Physics courses. I am aware that many colleges and universities have astronomy courses for non-majors that greatly simplify the material so that average students can get an idea of what the Universe is like without the need to know advanced Math and Physics. Creating such classes is not easy to do and it is insulting that someone would see this effort as nothing more than an opportunity to “goof around”. For the serious student, even if they are not a science major, these courses should be an easy A, if it lowered your GPA you got what you deserved.

I agree with what everyone above has posted, this is clearly the OP’s fault. Not to add insult to injury but I did want to point out one more thing.

The OP’s major is Biochem at UCSD. This an impacted major and thus, even if dashtiani’s GPA was above 3.0 right now, their TAG would not get them into the Biochemistry major at UCSD. In fact, TAG wouldn’t matter and dashtiani would be competing with all the other applicants. TAG only garauntee’s admission to the university, not the major.

However, given that dashtiani’s GPA is lower than 3.0, this is a non-issue. Chances of admission are less than 5%

I know I was at fault, but I was trying figure a way to get rid of 2 class grades from my transcript. I now see how my tactic is viewed from other points of view, but I see the absurdity in it now.

By the way TonyPreMed, you are mistaken, Biochemistry at San Diego is not impacted…I even called to make sure. It is not under the Biology field which is impacted.

But overall, it doesn’t matter, I will still probably be able to get into at least UCR or UCSC. As long as I am admitted to a UC I will be happy, hopefully UCSC though… haha.

But there is no need to give a lecture of something that is so simply obvious. It is obvious that irresponsibility and carelessness leads to a bad GPA. I hate repetitive posts of people nagging at the OP rather than helping find a solution or giving a vague honest response.

At the beginning of my school year I did not have the transfer mentality as it came to me late. Things have changed and I have learned much more from my past actions.
