is there a way to make sure you get a good dorm?

or is it totally random upon request?

orrrr if you request it early on do you have a better shot?

i want to be on central! (as i'm sure everyone does..)

As a freshman, you don’t get to request where you live. You “rank” Central/Hill, Bursley, and Baits 1, 2, and 3. Approximately 60% of freshman end up on North Campus, and it’s really not that bad. The only way you can guarantee housing on Central is by joining a MLC (Michigan Learning Community) that houses its residents in a hall that’s on central. Not all MLCs are available to freshmen, however.

do the cheaper ones go fast? or is it usually by location?

You’re gonna want to apply to a learning community to live on central. Some are more popular than others but I think you can apply to like 3 so getting into at least one on central shouldn’t be a problem if you want to do it.

What rootbeerfloat909 said is basically correct.

Baits 1 is being closed next year, and there is no Baits 3. Bursley, Baits 2, and Northwood are going to be the only housing on North Campus for freshman next year. I’m assuming that more freshman are going to be placed on Central next year and years to come with the renovations to dorms on Central.

If you do end up on North, it’s really not bad at all. The only part that is semi-annoying is the bus, but it’s really not THAT bad.

^ Baits 2 is gonna get renovated next year, they’re opening northwood 3 for freshman.

There’s actually gonna be more freshman on north next year, more like 70%. East quad is closing for the year and is moving temporarily to west quad so there will be even less space for freshman on central. Alice Lloyd is reopening but thats mostly sophomores. There’s gonna be a lot more freshmen in Northwood next year which would actually really suck.

Maize there will be the same amount, Alice Lloyd is opening up remember? Couzens, Alice Lloyd and MoJo are a mix of freshmen and sophomores (EQ was as well), so there should be a similar amount of freshmen on North next year. I feel like they’ll have to build a new dorm pretty soon though.

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen something either in the daily or in some university publication that said there would be around 70% of freshmen on north next year but we’ll see I guess.

It’s random. I almost think they’ve give you what you don’t want. All my friends requested central campus/Hill and were placed in Bursley/baits. I requested Bursley and was placed in central Campus on Markely. Lol. Maybe you can request what you don’t want and trick the system. Haha.

Or maybe it’s just random…

^I requested central and got Markley, so they’re not that evil :P

The only way you can possibly be certain that you will get what you want is to be extremely well-connected at UM.

Do honors, and then drop out of the program the first thing freshman year. It’s a useless program but the south quad housing makes it worth the essay.
