Is There an Edge When Applying Early?

I always hear a lot about how EA and ED applicants have a "higher chance" of being admitted to colleges. And seeing how for a lot of colleges have generally a higher acceptance rate during the Early round than the Regular round, it kind of does seem that way. And I know there are a lot of factors involved, so I can't make definitive assumptions. So I was wondering if people (or admission officers - that'd be awesome) who knew could tell me: Does applying Early really mean you have a higher chance of being admitted?

I'm going to take the SAT in October and the SAT IIs in November and December. Since RD also asks for mid-year transcripts, I figured that my GPA would be a bit higher as well. It also gives me a lot more time to work on my Music and Art Supplements. So I figure if I can make my application more competitive for the Regular round, I might as well apply then, and apply to non-restrictive EA target and safety schools during the Early Round.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Depends on the schools. Ivy schools have higher acceptance rate for applying early BUT the numbers lie as it is increase because athletics that have received likely letters are applying early. All depends on the school but to be honest it won’t affect your chances that much. There are much more things you can be doing to improve your chances if applying early would make the difference.

Calvin: the reasons you stated are the EXACT ones that favor not applying early to selective colleges. The GPA boost, the (hopeful) better test scores – are what will make you more attractive to the more selective schools.
