I just decide to reject RISD to Parsons for finaid problem. I will major in communication design.
Is there any body reject RISD to other art school?

breelx, there are MANY kids who have and will continue to reject RISD for financial reasons. There was just someone on these boards posted a comparison question between RISD and Pratt, whereby Pratt gave her a LOT of aid. Most posters recommend Pratt for design under those circumstances.

Yes, RISD is a terrific school, but it isn’t that much better than some of the better art and design schools. It just isn’t! If you can get a great financial package for a fine school like Parsons vs. very little from RISD, take Parsons unless your parents are very wealthy. Don’t go into large amounts of debt under any circumstances.

First of all, congratulations on your acceptance to RISD! That is a huge accomplishment, and you should be justly proud.

However, RISD does not expect that all of the applicants to whom admission is offered will accept. In fact, they are counting on most of them not coming! It would be a disaster, perhaps a happy one, if all 900+ accepted students showed up. RISD does not have the facilities for all of these accepted students. That is why their target is about 420.

I don’t know the ins and out of RISD’s finances, but for many, if not most, elite schools, the tuition does not cover the actual cost of educating the student. Gifts and endowment cover a lot of the cost. Even if all 900+ accepted students showed up with $33k checks in hand, I doubt they would all get the “RISD experience” they had been promised.

Good luck with your decisions!

I rejected RISD for the Community College of Rhode Island and have no regrets. What I regret is that I can’t go to neither Parsons or Pratt, which I also got accepted to. My family makes over 100,000 a year, so I was not eligible for any aid anywhere. I only applied to those art colleges and since I have three younger siblings my parents aren’t willing to pay for an expensive school because theres other kids to worry about. Next year I plan on transferring to another school, but I don’t know what college yet.

Since i’m living in RI, I was mostly planning on going to RISD, but after visiting it several times, I eliminated it because I hated the atmosphere. All the kids there struck me as a bunch of uptight, pretentious A-Holes who walk around practically high off the fact that they’re there, and i felt like i could literally see on their faces the words “OMG Im an RISD student”. It really ruined my fantasies because I did want to like the school since it’s got such a “stellar reputation” and all, and because I didn’t want to move far from home since almost all my high school friends are sticking around this area.

I visited Pratt and Parsons with my mom, and the only thing that I can say I liked less about these schools is that they’re not as pretty as RISD. However the people seemed way more welcoming, which is funny, considering how New Yorkers have a reputation for being rude. People smile at you when you walk by, everyone says excuse me, nobody has a cold attitude, and most of all, the students actually have personalities. All the kids at RISD just walked with this air like that they think they’re so ~~~uber special~~~*~ because they study at that school. If you’re a laid back person who doesn’t click with that type of arrogance, you wouldn’t like RISD.

Obviously I’m not saying that EVERYONE at RISD is an A-Hole, but just taking a simple walk and observing those kids, you get the vibe that most of them are cold, not very welcoming, and really arrogant. Walking around Parsons/Pratt you kind of get the vibe that the people there are more genuine and less uptight than those at RISD. Also, the setting is way more exciting in NY than it is in RI so if you’re prepared to take that on, it would be a blast.

So I’m glad that you were able to make that choice, because you have no idea how lucky you are. If I had been in the position to choose any of those schools without financial problems, I probably would have gone to either Parsons or Pratt. Most likely Pratt because of its campus.

I’m rejecting RISD for pratt- got moolah from pratt.
