With over 80% white, how is there a good mix of people here?

I’m sure that with the number of admitted URM’s this years, the diversity will increase more. I know alot of my black friends were admitted, although they are choosing other schools because the diveristy and location of UGA is too far from the main city. Alot of them are choosing GSU so I’ll be more happy.

I’ve read on alot of places though, and please don’t base opinions on this, but it’s still fairly segregated with whites hanging out with whites, blacks with blacks, hispanics with hispanics and asians with asians.

I still think the diversity will increase over the next several years as UGA’s is starting to look much better to URM’s because the diversity will increase. I’d say in 10 years, UGA will look more like 65% white with the other 35% URMs…more like the other top universities here in the united states. It’s getting there, but it’s not there yet.

Thanks for the reply. I like diversity in my college and with it’s location too it wouldn’t make a great experience.

I don’t think increasing the number of non-white people in a school is going to increase mixing of races. So sure, maybe the number of non-white people at UGA is rising, but that doesn’t mean that they’re intermixing. Do you define diversity as the very presence of other races or that they actually mingle? Because UGA is pretty segregated for the most part. I’ve said this before on here that we’re separated like this: sorority girls, fraternity boys, non-greek white people, blacks, indians, asians (and among these, split into their respective nationalities), and hispanics.

I get confused with questions like this…is this the politically correct way of saying “Are there enough [insert non-white race] people there for me to hang out with?” I mean, I’m not saying that the original poster meant this. I just thought about that now. Many people come here and ask this question, and I never really understand why they’re asking and what diversity would mean to them. Maybe if you would enlighten me, I could give you a better idea of the population (or at least my take on it).

If that is what you’re really asking, I would say that, as a minority myself, there are enough non-white people to interact with and know. I feel like the indians here are pretty close knit (or at least from the outside, it looks like this). Asians are a little more segregated by nationality (and this is probably more because of the language), but there are definitely enough to get to know. I don’t really personally know any black people here, but I feel like there is a significant amount or at least enough to make a lot of good friends. There are also a lot of student groups that are for specific cultural groups and even a couple of sororities/fraternities that are culture-centric. I’m not sure how many people you want to know, but it’s definitely not hard to find them.

I think that is a pretty accurate description jenmarie. There are many diffferent races, but they tend to stick to together, but with that said, everyone is generally pretty cool with everyone. By the way, its pretty cool that you are still posting on here jenmarie. I remember I had some questions a couple of years ago when I was still deciding whether to go to UGA or not.
