Is there any good school in california that I can get into?

Hi,

I was wondering if there are any good premed schools in california that I actually have a good shot of getting into. My dream school is UCLA, but I'll never get in just because UC is so partial towards instaters. So are there any other schools I can get into that are in california? I wanna go premed so schools like Pepperdine, that are certainly good, are not exactly what I'm looking for since they're poor in the sciences.

Stats:
demographics:
*I am an Asian Indian Male (most likely won't help)
*From a competitive public high school in Oregon: Beaverton High School, which was also rated the best AP school in Oregon, so yeah, its a smart school. (being from oregon isn't going to help either)
*student body at school = 500+

IN SUMMARY: I should finish high school with around 3.75 or 3.8 UW GPA, but I'll do what ever I can to prevent that from happening. If I go down in flames, then I'll end up with a 3.7.

*class rank UW right now = 38/515. Weighted = 30/515 (will go up because not many kids have taken hard classes yet)

*Mathcounts Tutor (about 50+ volunteer hours)
*Right now I get about a 1920-2050 on the SAT, 28-30 on ACT according to Practice Tests for SAT, and the PLAN (it's like the PSAT for SAT except the ACT version) on ACT, but I'm shooting for at least a 2100 on the SAT and 32 on the ACT. Don't count on me getting a 2100 or a 32 because its not going to happen as far as I can tell right now

Look at:

UC-Santa Cruz, UC-Merced, UC-Riverside, Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, USan Francisco, URedlands, Chapman, CSU-Fullerton, CSU-Chico, CSU-Monterey Bay, USan Diego....

those aren't exactly my opinion of good, no offense to anyone that goes there. any other thoughts?

Jeez, you ask for opinions and then criticize? I don't know much about the others, but U Redlands has quite a good reputation in the sciences.

Occidental is definitely worth checking out, as are Claremont McKenna and Pitzer.

criticize is a strong word. I'm just saying that those aren't the type of schools I'm looking for. I simply disagreed, I didn't go on a tirad saying what a loser he was for saying that. I appreciate any help, but I'm just telling future helpers that I'm not really looking for those types of schools.

Just relax

since you are premed, you might rethink coming south. High GPA is paramount for med admissions, and the UC like SD and Irvine, which are gread in sciences, are extremely competitive. You might find it easier to earn a high gpa at, say, OSU. You would likely receive merit money at Pacific. Also consider USC.

fwiw: the publics offer a lot of self-help in finaid, so a UC school will run $40k per year.

california_love8:

UCLA: Slight Reach (out of state)

USC, Santa Clara (on it's way up), The mid tier UCs: Davis, SB and Irvine, Pitzer, Occidental

I would highly reccomend UC Davis if you are looking for a California school that is strong in the sciences... contrary to whatever pre-convieved notions you seem to have about some of the UCs, UC Davis is actually a really excellent school.

If you want a school that is higher ranked though, UC San Diego is great for sciences as well.

usc has a program where u get entrance into the med school starting as a freshman so you do your undergrad with pre-med and already have a place secured in med school so you don't have to apply to other places.

i think ur a match for ucla if u score like a 30-32 on ur act

u have a lot of good ec's (not when it comes to awards, but to lots of dedication...

and ur smart

hopefully you get accepted
good luck

SAT of 1975 and GPA UW of 3.8.

If we could figure your UC GPA out that would help a lot. Im guessing somwhere just above 4.0, so lets say 4.05-4.1.

From your earlier statements im guessing you are only interested in mid tier UC's (UCI/UCSB/UCD) and top tier UC's (UCB/UCLA/UCSD).

SAT of 1975 and UC GPA of 4.05-4.1, your out of state odds will look like this:

UCB/UCLA: Reach (your stats are just below their average for in state acceptees)
UCSD: Slight Reach (your stats are about average for their average in state acceptees)
UCI/UCSB/UCD: Match-Safe Match (your stats are above their average in state acceptees)

For Pre-Med Bio programs, UCLA, UCSD, and UC Berkeley are very good. If you could get an SAT above 2050, your odds would improve significantly. Best of luck!
