Is There Any Hope for Me?

Hey everybody!

I am an African American female in the 11th grade. Throughout out my junior year I've been having doubts about me getting into a good college. I made out a list of schools that I'm interested in:

Reach
~USC
~UC Berkeley
~UCLA
~Columbia
~Cornell
~Johns Hopkins

Target
~Howard University

Safety
~Penn State University Park
~Purdue University

Now for my info:
Current GPA: 3.3 UW/3.4 W
My goal for all four years is 3.4 UW/3.6 W

Honor Roll Award 9th & 11th grade (I was going through a phase during 10th)

SAT: 1900 (Math: 630, Writing: 680, Critical Reading: 590)
Yet to have taken SAT II

APs taken:
~World History/US History

APs I plan to take:
~Calculus/Physics/Government/Literature (I would take Computer Science but they don't offer it at my school so instead I'm going take it at a community college)

Extracurriculars:
~Varsity Softball - 9th, 10th, 11th (team captain and we've made it to finals; championship game is this Tuesday)
~Quiet Fire Track Club - 11th grade
~Going to start National Society for Black Engineers Chapter in 12th grade
~Volunteer at Kaiser 24 Hour Pharmacy
~Play piano from time to time
~Member of Congressional Youth Leadership Council
~Participated in Young Black Scholars

Experience:
~Taken Psychology, Japanese and received A's in both at community college/I plan to take Statistics and Computer Science at community college
~Traveled to Costa Rica (Education First Tour)
~Going to Europe (Education First Tour)

So can anybody tell me my chances of getting into any of these schools so far. I know some of these are very difficult colleges to get into. If my chances are low (which I'm sure they may be), could you tell me how to raise them. I'd really appreciate it. THANKS :D

Reach
~USC- You can get in
~UC Berkeley-No
~UCLA-No(if out-of-state)
~Columbia-No
~Cornell- it’s possible but unlikely.
~Johns Hopkins-Possible but unlikely

Oh wait. You ARE from cali. You juuust might get into UCLA but probably not Cal.

Thanks for your response. Ummm for Cal, it seems the only thing I have going for me is my SAT score (it falls within the middle 50%). Do you know of anyway that I could increase my chances?

I disagree. UCLA is still a reach, even though you’re instate.

My friend had about your GPA and slightly higher SATs and got into UPenn and CMU. He’s black like you.

Could you tell me a bit more about your friend. What else did he do? i’d like to know to bump up my chances. Thanks :D

I don’t think penn state is a safety school for you. You could get in but i doubt it’s a safety.

Im sorry but I dont think your going to get into any of your reach schools. Obviously you have ethnicity on your side, but your SAT needs at least to be at 2050 or so for any of those. You’ll get into Howard and I agree with the above. Penn St is more of a match then a safety. Maybe michigan st/ohio state for safety instead

You do have race on your side so I think USC and UCLA you could get into, but not the other ones, imo. I’ve never heard of Howard University before, so I can’t offer advice on that. I suggest you try to raise your SAT scores to improve your chances at, say, Berkeley.

According to CollegeBoard, Penn State University Park has an acceptance rate of 51% and 31% of the freshman class profile has a GPA between 3.00 and 3.49

As for Berkeley, my SAT scores fall within the Mid 50% test scores:
CR: 590-710
M: 630-750
W: 590-710

What do I dooo…?

I dont care if the average test scores for berkely are that low, alot of those are athletes, and others with special cases. most of the acceptances into berkely are kids with 2100+. because of your ethnicity you could probably get away with 2050 or so

mcfly, not true, my friend had a 1950 and got into UPenn, and he’s black.

Bump up the SATs by about 100 or so points, and fix your extracurriculars. Currently, they read as tentative. “I play piano from time to time, I’m going to start this, I participated in this.” Oh, and nobody is a “member” of CYLC. You pay a couple thousand dollars to do a program. I’ve been to quite a few CYLC events, and they are incredibly fun, but that’s not something I would put on my college application.

Im not racist at all but this kind of stuff really drives me crazy. I think its ridiculous that in order to fill racial quotas schools would drop down requirements on an SAT by as many as 300 pts. I mean lets be honest, if she were an asian/white student applying, there would not be even a remote shot at any of the reaches.

Runxc - although I disagree with the policy in principle, I do not feel that it’s racist. Statistics have shown African-Americans to perform lower on the SAT and other standardized tests than Caucasians and Asians (for a variety of socioeconomic reasons). I can understand the logic behind it, although I disagree with it.

I’m sorry if my thread is starting to cause anyone anger. That wasn’t my intention. I was just hoping to get chanced…teehee :)

But please, if you could continue chancing me, I’d really appreciate it.
