Is there any hope? Horrible grades

Hello everybody. My past academic record is horrendous and you all just need to know that I'm a completely different person and that I really want to attend a good university for Business. These are my grades from two community colleges I attended. My dream college is USC like so many of you. Other schools I'm looking into are (in order of preference): UCLA, UC Berkeley, UCI, UCSB, and UCSD. I will start clean at a new community college (LACC) this summer 2009 and I want nothing more than to get a 3.8-4.0 GPA and transfer to one of these great schools (preferably USC of course) What follows are my grades. It ain't pretty.

OCC Fall 2006-
Native American Studies: C
Elementary Astronomy: F
Freshman Composition: W
Hist. and Appreciation of Cinema: B

OCC Spring 2007-
Great Directors of Cinema: D
Intro to the Humanities: F
History of Rock Music: A

Total Units: 12

GPA: 1.67

Santa Ana College:

Fall 2007-
Intro to Solar System: A
Music Business: F

Spring 2008-
Stars and Galaxies: W

Total Units: 3
GPA: 2.40

I realize that this is absolutely horrific, but as I stated earlier I've done some soul searching and am now 100 percent committed to raising my GPA. Is there any hope left for me to attend USC or the other schools if I prove to them I do have what it takes? My brother graduated from USC Film School so maybe that could be of help.

UC’s will not accept you with those F’s. You must make them up.

What about academic renewal? Anyone else wanna chime in?

You can do academic renewal for those D’s and F’s you have your on transcripts. But some private schools do not accept academic renewal one of them being USC as they will still count those bad grades towards your overall GPA for admission. Your best bet is to try for the UC’s since they do accept academic renewal. But your going to need to have those grades removed with academic renewal from those CCC you went too. Also you need to find out the requirements for academic renewal at each of those CCC. At my CCC the requirements for academic renewal are to have complete a 20units with a 3.0 or a 30units with a 2.0. So you need to find out if you can even do academic renewal at your CCC.

Thanks for the advice. I’m totally willing to retake the courses. I really want to prove myself. I know I can do this.

Does anyone else have any advice to offer?

you’re going to have a some 'splaining to do to get into USC. they don’t honor academic renewal and (i’m pretty sure), for retaken classes, they average both grades.
all UCs other than UCLA and UCB (way competitive business programs) are within reach, if you perform from here on out.

see:

judging from the courses you’ve taken, i’m guessing you were considering film at one point? besides the not-so-favorable grades, universities requires you to have completed certain GE courses before you can even be considered for admission.
for usc, i believe you need to take a foreign language upto the 2nd or 3rd level and math. the lowest transferable math course is intermediate algebra (but it’ll most likely be calculus or higher if business is your major), both of which you didn’t include so you may wanna consider taking those. UCs also require a foreign language upto 2nd/3rd level but their lowest transf math course is statistics but it varies by major.
good luck :)

Make up those bad grades and prove to the schools that you are serious. Academic renewal sounds like a cop out to me (no offense), and it speaks volume about your work ethic. Get A’s in the classes you failed and go from there. You can only go up from here on.

It doesn’t look like you have too many F/D units. I’m guessing around 12? That’s still going to cause a dent on your future GPA. I would recommend trying to get academic renewal but always remember it could’ve been worst. My advice to you is to complete IGETC + all the pre-reqs with good grades. By the time you finish all of that you will probably have a lot of units that will help improve your GPA. If you have 90 units with 12 F quality units and 78 A quality units you end up with about a 3.5.

Thank you all for the wonderful advice. I have a lot of work to accomplish. I’m going to talk to a counselor at LACC and I’ll bring up some good points I read on here. I really appreciate the positive outlook everyone provided.

you won’t be able to change that C so thats gonna make your gpa suffer. Also, you’re gonna have to retake those classes at the original colleges you took them at.

when you talk to your counselor, here are a few suggested topics of inquiry:

Map out your entire schedule for the next however-long-it-takes-you-to-finish. It’ll provide for a sort of tangible overview of your progress over the semesters as well as relieve you of the stress of potentially having to crash classes.

Plan your classes in a way that would ensure that you complete all IGETC requirements BEFORE the spring semester before transfer.

Ask about how quickly you can get involved in the honors program.

Find out about TAGs EARLY.

Find out about things related to your major to which you can immediately become involved. A 2-year-long active involvement in a club, or something, both shows your commitment to one area of study and improves your chances of acquiring a leadership position therein.

about academic renewal. again, 2 years must have lapsed since your received the bad grade. my guess is that it would only do you some good for the Astronomy class. retake them all if you can afford to fit them into your schedule. i know astronomy satisfies one of the science requirements. also, you can take it with the lab, which knocks out another requirement. as for ‘great directors of cinema’ and ‘intro to humanities’ (whatever that is…), you’ll probably be left having to repeat them.

when you do repeat them, make sure you get A’s.
you don’t want to show that you’re incapable of mastering the subject (maybe shown by a B or a C), but rather that you simply didn’t put forth the effort required for an adequate grade.

best of luck.

Thanks so much pinkerfloyd. Your knowledge on this is very helpful.

JetForce said something that scared me. Am I really going to have to retake the classes I got the F’s and D in at the community college I originally took them? I don’t live in Orange County anymore. I’m up in L.A. now.

First, which of those are UC transferable ?

When you say you want to go for Business, what majors are you looking at for UCLA? I think only HAAS and UCI have a Business administration major.

ALL the courses I took are UC transferable. The only one I’m not sure about is the Music Business course I took at Santa Ana College. It’s not listed on the assist.org website which is a shame because I do need to retake that class.

Does anyone know if I have to retake the classes I got the F’s and D in at the same community college I originally took them at?

Malishka-I’m looking at Business Administration and Business Econ.

I understand how you feel that you’ve changed for the better, but there’s no taking anybody’s word in this game–the proof is in the pudding. Go back to your CC, and put forth that new-found desire to succeed there, and let that carry over to whichever university you transfer to.

What’s alarming to schools like USC and UCLA about this transcript is that you got C’s in middle-of-the-road CC classes, so how will you be able to hang in classes at a top 25 university? Also, you withdrew a couple times, which shows a bit of a commitment issue with attending class, which is very important to universities.

You still might have a chance to transfer to the colleges you are looking to get into since you have not fulfilled your business administration prereqs. But if you keep up your grades like that then your chances seem slim to none. All of the colleges you are going to apply to will notice the grades on your major prereq courses (micro & macro economics, calculus, english, and w/e) which it doesn’t seem you have taken yet. The avg GPA of USC Marshall was recorded at a 3.8 which is far beyond what you have currently. As for UCLA, don’t mess up in economics or calculus courses with a D or F because they unlike other UC’s will not give academic renewal to business economics majors.

You should look into the colleges you are applying to find out if those schools have an agreement with your current community college, find transferrable courses, and also find their prereq’s for your major.

Also to boost your chances, I would really recommend adding some EC’s if you haven’t already.

I myself am a Business Administration major and hoping to go to those schools too.

to be honest, i’m not exactly sure how it works. i THINK it’s suggested that you take them at the same college, but i’m not sure that it’s required.
best bet is to ask your counselor.

pretty sure it has to be at the same college

They had to be from the original college in my experience.
