Is there any hope?

Hello everyone,

My name is Daniel, I am a 20 year old student, US citizen, currently living in Uruguay and born in Colombia. I have studied psychology for 2 years in Uruguay at the UCU (Universidad Catolica del Uruguay), yet I have found the education there to be lackluster and uninteresting for me, therefore, I am considering the possibility of moving to Florida, but my main concern is the incredibly harsh competition for undergraduate admissions and the possibility of losing two years of my study and end up being rejected everywhere.

My GPA isn’t calculated (haven t found a way to calculate my GPA reliably yet) but as far as I ve seen from researching how GPAs are calculated, I would assume it’s probably somewhere around 3, and have graduated on the top 20-30% of my generation.(Yes, I know, not very impressive, I was never the best student I could possibly be, but I wasn’t horribly bad either.) I believe that with my skills I wouldn’t have trouble with the TOEFL, and I could possibly get a 1800 SAT(hopefully more) In college, my grade average is 4.6/6 (they grade on a scale of 6 over there) again, good, but not incredible. My teachers have always viewed me as a critical thinker, someone who is passionate about research and overcoming my own limits. For extracurriculars, I have gone to acting classes since I was 14(Both in Colombia and Uruguay) worked on a circus project (Colombia) play drums for 4 years and guitar for 1 (still going at it) and have done at least 300 hours of community service (both in Colombia and Uruguay combined) I also speak 3 languages, English, French (attended the Liceo Francés in Colombia for a long time, but didn’t finish, still I can defend myself in places like Canada without any trouble) and of course Spanish.

I have looked at many universities, and I would love getting into somewhere like UFL, although I know it is insanely hard and possibly not a realistic expectation, I’ve also had interest on other places like FSU, UCF, UNF, USF… but I don t know if I could stand any chance.

I have also weighted the possibilities of getting to a Community College, so far, places like Santa Fe CC, Palm Beach CC and Broward CC seem like good options. But is there an actual chance I could transfer to any of those universities from any of those CCs? Would I stand any chance of getting into any of those before mentioned universities without having to go to a CC? What course of action should I take? Or should I just remain in Uruguay and try to do a Masters over there after I’m done with my degree? Are there any recommendations you could give me?

A million thank-yous in advance, my mind has been going over this issue again and again, and I am sincerely scared to fail.

With all my regards,

Daniel.

UCF and FSU will likely accept you, but you’ll need to pay full tuition.

Bubbles for sale, what do you mean full tuition?Doesn t it help that I am an US citizen?

Also, would a good essay about my experiences living in different countries and my cultural diversity help at all?

i think your diversity would help- colleges really like that. and as for full tuition idk, because you can try and apply for financial aid and stuff but im not sure how much youd get.

Thank you jmust777, any other advise anyone could give me?what chances do you belive I could have with those grades?Thank you all seriously,I need as much information as possible before moving.

Bump, I m sorry if I m doing kind of a tread necromancy, and I know my case isn t particularly usual, but I need to hear your opinions on this issue, this decision is seriously one of the most important ones I can make in my life.

Your GPA would be right above a 3.0. This isn’t going to automatically disqualify you from a UF acceptance. I do know UF won’t accept you if you don’t have an Associate’s Degree or 60 transferable credits. This is due to space limitations for transfer students. Also, Since you live out of the sate of FL you’ll be paying the out-of-state tuition price. This is a significantly higher price for tuition than in-state residents will pay.

If I were in your shoes I would apply to a CC near my desired school. i would look at applying to CC’s near UF, FSU, and USF. Out of state tuition at CC’s are much less than at a University and after a year you can apply for Florida residency which will give you in-state tuition.

My father lives in the US, does that make any difference_I have seen of UF s admissions that there are exceptions like those that do not page out of state tuition.

Out of state tuition applies to anyone who lives outside of FL. This isn’t just for international students it includes the other US states as well. They can wave out-of-state fees but it is unlikely. If/when you move to FL the first thing you should do is get a ID/License and a voter ID. A year from that date you can apply for instate tuition.

I have a social security card and drivers liscence there from long ago, would that work?

I don’t think so. I would contact an advisor at UF/FSU/USF and get their opinion. They will be extremely more knowledgeable in what can be considered as proof of residency.

Thank you very much,surrency1992. Anyone else got any advise or can chance me based on their experience?

Bumped again, in case anyone has anything left to say…

Well, thanks to everyone that replied ,hopefully, I can make the decision soon enough :), and with a bit of luck, get accepted into UF, FSU or USF :)
