So first let me say that I'm applying for PR & Advertising at the Dodge College.

stats:

GPA 2.8 UW (I know, I know. Affected by unmedicated ADD and father's terminal cancer diagnosis)
Have taken AP's, scored 4's
SAT: 760 CR, 710 W 580 M (2050)
EXCELLENT letters of recommendation
Took comm. college classes during Jr year, made 3.7 GPA and on Dean's List over both quarters.
I am biracial (hispanic and white) and go to a public school where the average gpa is 3.25

I've had a lot of success in student film, I've won 10+ awards in state, national and international festivals including 1st and 2nd place at a national college festival, official selection of Seattle International Film Festival and National Film Festival for Talented Youth and 2 Northwest Emmy Nominations.

I also have interned at Seattle Intl Film Festival for 2 years and founded and run a youth film committee of 23 other kids there.

I am copy editor of my school newspaper and have done very well in DECA, placing at state for 2 years in a row and I've created an ad campaign used by Seattle Public Utilities.

My essays are also very strong. I know it's a long shot.

You have 2 hurtles: (a) getting accepted to Chapman and (b) getting accepted to the PR/Ad program by Dodge. Chapman cares more about your stats and Dodge looks for for creatvity and evidence of commitment to craft. You are very strong in what Dodge is looking for but if Dodge says YES and Chapman says NO, you are out of luck. I think your stats are mixed (SATS very strong, GPA feh) but I still predict you will get an offer from Chapman as well. Did you explain your personal trevails in your applications?

ugh of course there’s a chance for anyone to get into any college but why pray tell do you need a bunch go 16 year olds online to tell you that!?
ughh if i see another “chance me” post again…

Mia, Did you apply for EA or regular? Did you also put down a second choice major? I’m a parent of a Chapman student so I understand what you must be going through, especially at this time of the year for HS seniors. Sorry to hear your father has terminal cancer. If you’ve stated that on your application, they will understand your situation, so not to worry too much about it. You did your part by applying. Chapman has a big heart. Anything is possible. Best of luck!

I think you certainly sound like an impressive student and a dedicated and involved media buff – the kind of person who would be a good fit for Dodge. GPA is a little weak, sure, but your test scores show that you are a capable student. I agree that if you mention your personal issues, the college may be understanding. Personally, I feel it is a bigger deal to triumph over this major life stuff than simply to earn impressive scores and numbers while sitting in a classroom. Couldn’t hurt to mention your ethnic background as well. Judging by their video essay requirement (for film) I think Dodge looks for students who have something to say. After all, Chapman isn’t a big university who will judge applicants purely on the numbers. They are smaller and have the luxury of considering applicants from all the angles. They want a good mix of competent and interesting people. Best of luck to you! You certainly sound like a person that can make it happen no matter what life deals you!
