I'm not talking about ED. A lot of schools let you apply before October so you can get a decision in December. Is there any reason to not apply this early?

The only reason I cant think of is so maybe you can pad your resume more if you have another semester?

Pretty much, no. When I was a senior, I didn’t apply early action because I waited a long time until I asked for recommendation letters and I wanted more time to work on the essays. But if you can get your application in by October, and your teachers have enough time to write your recommendations, I would definitely recommend it. I’m not sure whether you mean early action or rolling admissions. Rolling admissions means first-come-first-serve basis; there’s no real due date. For those you should definitely apply early.

Well some schools have an early filing period where you can apply earlier and get an earlier decision. It’s kind of like early action but no officially early action. University of Illinois calls it “the priority filing period”.

Go for it! No reason not to if it’s not ED. My DS did that with Michigan for RD and it was definitely a good feeling to have one acceptance early on.

Some schools say if you apply early action, you can not be applying early decision any where else. I know one example of this is BC. So just be sure to read over all your agreements carefully.

Yeah, it’ll be more of a hassle for you to get everything done within a shorter amount of time, especially if you’re a procrastinator.

Some schools give you priority for scholarships and honors programs if you make their first deadline, on top of telling you sooner. The only reason not to make these deadlines is if you have other schools that are higher priorities with similar deadlines. Most apps are out now, so you should start getting an idea of where you want to apply. If any of those places have early/priority deadlines, start working on those apps now because it could mean $$$ in the future.

If you know where you want to go (or have a pretty good list) -no point in delaying.

My son already has his school transcripts (from both schools) and his SAT scores at several universities. He is deciding on a couple of others and then will have transcripts/SAT scores sent to them. He has a detailed resume put together that he can use to fill out the applications and he has 1 essay written and is working on 2 more this week.

He knows that he has a VERY full class schedule next year and that band (especially in the fall) takes up a lot of time. He doesn’t want to put it all off till the last minute.

Unless you need 1st semester senior grades to show up on your transcript (which you really want if you’re showing improvement over your 4 years) or you are expecting to accomplish something noteworthy in those months, there’s really no good reason.

Well the most obvious reason to not apply early:

If you need to take the SAT again in hopes of raising your score.

^^^
But if you are happy with your grades and happy with your scores…no reason not to.
