Is there any reason to take IEFX classes my freshman year at UIUC?

Im a Mechanical Engineering major at UIUC and will be a freshman in the upcoming fall semester. Im currently registered for 17 credit hours and and concerned that it is too much. One of the classes I signed up for is called ENG 198 - Personal Mobility Innovations (part of the IEFX programs). Does this course meet any graduation requirements? If not I will likely drop it and shed the 2 credit hours to take my total down to a more managable 15. If it does meet requirements, do you recommend I keep the class or drop it and just fill the requirement some other semester when i have a smaller work load? Thanks

No don’t take any unless you’re really interested in the material. It doesn’t fill any requirement and you shouldn’t be taking 17CH first semester.

@literallymarx - the university recommends 13 credit hours for the first semester, then up to 18 on the suggested sequence (materials eng). Was it also your/your friends experience that 13 hours it should be? Does it get a lot easier in the second semester so they recommend 16-17 CH, or is there another reason for not taking say 16 CH in the first semester?

I took 14 first semester and 18 the next, it worked out fine. Generally you want an easy first semester so you have time to adjust to college and the rigor of the engineering program. Afterwards, you have a better idea of your abilities and much more flexibility with scheduling.
