Is there any transportation to Iowa City?

I'm wondering if anyone knows if there is any transportation available from Grinnell to get to University of Iowa? My daughter hopes she will be able to visit a best friend who is going to school there.

Although I'm not sure when it spcifically starts, there is a shuttle from Grinnell to Iowa City for the students that usually runs every other Saturday or so. Sometimes there may be a three week gap. It gives them about 5 hours from the time they're dropped off until they are picked up. The bus stops first at the Coralville Mall and then there is a drop off in downtown just across the street from the outer edge of the U. of Iowa. On alternate Saturdays it goes to the mall in West Des Moines and once in a while it goes to an outlet mall which I think is on the way to Iowa City. My S says there will be a schedule posted at school.

I didn't even know about this. My son never wanted to leave campus!

She will be excited to hear this. Thanks for the info!

momMB,

You're welcome.

Even though she's still a year away from applying, my daughter was also glad to know about this, as well, since she really enjoyed her stay in Iowa City this summer.:)

I really like Iowa City too. It reminds me a little of Burlington, VT. I was sorry to hear about the flooding.

how about transportation to chicago? is there a shuttle that goes there?

There is a shuttle service to and from Chicago at the beginning and end of breaks. I don't know the fee. It's provided by Hamilton Travel, not the college. The college does shuttles at the beginning and end of the school year, but only to/from the Des Moines airport. That costs $25 and you need to reserve in advance. You can get taxis or private shuttles, but I think that would be expensive.

The Chicago shuttle is $60 each way if you reserve more than a week in advance. Two bags 50 pounds each allowed. Have to pay extra for more or heavier bags.

Does anyone know if there is a shuttle to St. Paul/ Minneapolis for any of their breaks? It would be great if there was an alternative for me to making the 9 hour round trip to pick her up.

Yes, there is a shuttle to and from the Mpls/St. Paul airport for breaks. It costs $70 each way and make reservations well in advance.

In a bind on 2 occasions (family emergencies, not a regular travel time) my son used a local taxi service to Des Moines (also goes to Iowa City). Reliable and not ridiculously expensive. Mostly he used the shuttle or friends drove him
