Hi, I'm going to be a junior this upcoming school year and I want to join jrotc, but my school doesn't offer it. I was wondering if there was any way I could still join either as some kind of summer program or during the school year some place else (preferably the first one). I live on Long Island, New York, which is supposedly a pretty "rich" area, so there aren't many people wanting to join the army or go to a military college like I do.

You can’t join JROTC unless you were a member of a school that offered it. However, there are programs pretty much just like JROTC that are offered, you can look them up and see if there are any squadrons near you. There is the Civil Air Patrol, if you find any cadet or composite squadrons (which are adults and kids) you can join. Civil Air Patrol closely follows the Air Force and might benefit you if you’re looking at USAFA. There are also the Naval Sea Cadets, although it may be a little too late to join them, since they require that you do a special summer thing before you can move up in rank. If you’re still interested though, look up a local unit and ask!

There is also something called the infantry explorers, there are not many of these but I’m pretty sure that they do stuff with field training and army stuff. This is more army, as where CAP is more air force and sea cadets are more navy. I’m also pretty sure there’s a coast guard auxiliary for kids too.

Anyway, what school are you looking at?

I second phoenixpop!

My son is in Civil Air Patrol and loves it. It took a while for him to find his niche/speciality. There is a Long Island group – just googled it - here is the link - [CAP LIG - What We Do](<a href=“Home | Long Island Group, New York Wing”>Home | Long Island Group, New York Wing) More importantly, look at the National summer programs to get an in-depth peek as to all it offers.

CAP and SeaCadets offer more hands on than JROTC. And they are not mutually exclusive.I know CAP cadets who are also ROTC and JROTC.

Thanks guys. I currently go to Syosset High, and I’m trying to get into West Point. The problem with the Air Force is that I don’t meet the height requirements–I need to be 5’4" and I’m only 5’1.5" (I’m a girl, by the way). And with the navy, I can’t swim, so that would be a really big problem.

I’ll talk to my school’s guidance counselor and ask what she thinks, but this is incredibly helpful. Thanks a lot!

You could be in the Civil Air Patrol in high school and be in ROTC in college.
